Day Custodians are responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment in all guest-facing areas during operating hours. This role focuses on high-traffic spaces, restrooms, and immediate response to guest needs to ensure an exceptional visitor experience. They are critical to the Science Center; they are the front line of our guest experience, serving as ambassadors while cleaning and creating a welcoming environment in our facilities and grounds.
This shift is 630am-230pm.
- Maintain cleanliness in all guest-facing areas during operating hours, including lobbies, restrooms, and high-traffic spaces.
- Respond promptly to guest cleaning requests and spills to ensure safety and comfort.
- Empty trash and recycling receptacles and replace liners throughout public areas.
- Restock restroom supplies and sanitize fixtures regularly.
- Perform routine floor care such as sweeping, mopping, and spot cleaning.
- Clean glass, stainless steel, and other surfaces in public view.
- Assist with event setup and breakdown during daytime operations.
- Report on maintenance issues promptly to Facilities team.
- Maintain cleaning supplies and equipment in operable condition.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, guest-facing environment.
- Strong customer service and communication skills for interacting with guests and staff.
- Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, proper dilution, and safe handling procedures.
- Familiarity with basic custodial tools and equipment (mops, vacuums, restroom cleaning kits).
- Ability to follow daily checklists and respond promptly to urgent cleaning needs.
- Flexibility to work weekends and holidays as part of a regular schedule.
- Basic computing skills for logging maintenance issues and completing task checklists.
Required:
- At least 1 year of custodial or janitorial experience in a guest-facing environment.
- Ability to work weekends and holidays as part of a regular schedule.
- Basic knowledge of cleaning chemicals and safety protocols.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks such as bending, stooping, and standing for extended periods.
Preferred:
- Experience in a museum, hospitality, or similar public setting.
- Familiarity with basic custodial equipment (upright vacuums, mops, restroom cleaning kits).
- Strong customer service background.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, and reaching throughout shift.
- Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly.
- Repetitive motions such as sweeping, mopping, and wiping surfaces.
- Ability to talk, hear, and visually inspect work for accuracy and thoroughness.
- Medium work – exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and up to 30 lbs. frequently.
- Primarily indoors in guest-facing areas; occasional exposure to outdoor conditions.
