Position Overview
We are hiring temporary Solid Waste Laborer I positions to fill temporary roles for the next three (3) months and establish an Eligibility Register for future full‑time Solid Waste Laborer I positions.
Starting pay is $26.88 per hour. All work is day shift, including weekends and some holidays, and performed at one of Snohomish County’s solid waste facilities.
Responsibilities- Provide excellent customer service to Solid Waste customers.
- Perform manual labor tasks such as sweeping, hosing, shoveling, lifting and carrying heavy objects.
- Learn to operate equipment including backhoe, forklift, terminal tractor and hydraulic compactor.
- Direct vehicles to unloading areas, enforce safety rules, assist customers in unloading vehicles.
- Assist with facility maintenance tasks such as mowing lawns, raking leaves, cleaning culverts and drainage ditches.
- Operate yard goat/tractor and handle solid waste trailers, including positioning and hooking up to the compactor.
- Inspect, operate and perform basic maintenance on backhoes, ATVs, forklifts, cranes and other related equipment.
- Maintain equipment service records and perform minor adjustments.
- Accurately log and input transaction ticket information into a computerized system.
- Drive a light vehicle to pick up supplies, recyclables and solid waste.
- Identify hazardous wastes, segregate as necessary and coordinate with vendors.
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
- First Aid/CPR certification within six (6) months of employment.
- Must pass job‑related tests.
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.
- Certification on backhoe, yard goat, push blades, forklift, stationary crane, waste export scale automation system, time‑keeping system and other solid waste handling equipment within six (6) months of employment.
- Temporary employees eligible for medical benefits and PERS.
- Regular employees, after completion of one year of training, are promoted to Solid Waste Laborer II and become eligible for step increases and additional benefits.
- Medical, dental, vision, life insurance, long‑term disability, deferred compensation and more.
- Annual step increases and COLA adjustments effective Jan 1 , 2027.
- Paid holidays: 11 legal holidays and two floating holidays annually.
- Paid leave: sick leave (8 hours per month) and vacation leave (8 hours per month, 2.4 weeks first year).
- Employer‑paid ORCA card.
