Scope of Position

The Janitor and Maintenance Support position plays a vital role in supporting the mission of The Salvation Army by ensuring that all facilities, vehicles, and operational needs are maintained in a clean, safe, and functional condition. This position is responsible for janitorial services, building and grounds support, vehicle oversight, basic maintenance, and communication with leadership regarding facility and program needs.

Education & Experience
  • High school graduate
  • Related experience in janitorial and maintenance services (preferably three years)
Qualifications
  • At least 21 years old, current WA Driver License
  • Cleared Motor Vehicle Records check
  • Compliance with child protection policies
  • Understanding and acceptance of The Salvation Army’s mission, philosophy, program, and practices
  • Ability to work independently or with other staff
  • Calm under demanding situations
  • Organizational skills – manage multiple tasks accurately and efficiently
  • Clear reading and writing in English
  • Effective with clients from diverse backgrounds
  • Accurate with numbers for billing, membership payments, rental invoices, contracts, etc.
  • Assist in set‑up and take‑down procedures throughout the facility
  • Perform interior janitorial duties during special events or absence of the janitor
  • Make supply runs for maintenance and janitorial supplies
  • Repair basic building systems: electrical, carpentry, plumbing, drainage, roof drains, heating, and cooling systems
  • Maintain inventory of maintenance equipment
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Responsibilities

Janitorial Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, offices, classrooms, worship spaces, gymnasium, and common areas
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and maintain floors as scheduled
  • Empty trash and recycling; dispose of waste properly
  • Restock restroom and janitorial supplies
  • Clean windows, doors, fixtures, and high‑touch surfaces
  • Follow Salvation Army safety, sanitation, and infection‑control standards
  • Collaborate with supervisor and management on routine schedules

Janitorial Duties by Area

  • Administrative Building
    • Vacuum all carpets daily
    • Dust‑mop floors daily
    • Mop floors as needed
    • Full‑fellowship‑hall floor mop on Monday, Wednesday, Friday
    • Sweep, dust‑mop and spot‑damp mop tile floors by 8:00 a.m.
    • Sanitize bathrooms daily
    • Empty all trashcans daily
    • Clean staff break room – sinks, countertops, windows, dust ledges, sanitize and empty garbage
    • Sanitize trashcans as needed
    • Clean restrooms, sinks, toilets, and floors daily
    • Vacuum, clean windows, dust ledges, empty trash cans in administration offices
    • 2nd floor storage room – sweep and empty trash weekly (more often during Christmas); mop floor as needed
  • Fellowship Hall
    • Dust‑mop floors daily
    • Spot mop floors as needed
    • Mop entire hall floor on Wednesday and Friday
    • Empty all trashcans daily
  • Kitchen
    • Empty all trashcans daily
    • Use auto scrubber on last Friday of the month
  • Classrooms & Computer Lab
    • Clean tables and chairs on Friday
    • Remove all trash
    • Wipe down woodwork as needed
    • Vacuum and damp mop floors as needed
    • Sanitize trashcans as needed
  • Chapel & Chapel Lobby
    • Vacuum Tuesday and Thursday (more often if necessary)
    • Empty trash daily, remove cobwebs, clean all glass incl. doors
    • Dust all fixtures, pews, altar, podium, windowsills, and all woodwork daily
    • Straighten items in chairs (songbooks, Bibles, etc.)
    • Polish altar and piano
  • Chapel & Multi‑Purpose Room Restrooms
    • Sanitize fixtures, toilets, sinks, dispensers
    • Clean woodwork
    • Empty trashcans
    • Sanitize trashcans
