Under the direct supervision of a Foreman or a higher-level officer, this is miscellaneous manual labor and maintenance work to ensure that buildings, facilities, and equipment are safe, functional, and compliant with regulations. An employee in this class performs a variety of routine and semi-skilled maintenance work in accordance with established schedules and special instructions. Work is reviewed through inspections for adherence to procedures, guidelines, and safety practices.
Responsibilities- Assists with basic construction, repair, and maintenance of infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveways, parking lots, parks, fences, roofs, and public facilities by patching roads, driveways, parking lots, and pathways, as well as preparing surfaces for painting simple, non-technical areas by washing, scraping, and masking.
- Performs various unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair, and operation of public infrastructure, including assisting skilled trades workers such as carpenters, plumbers, and mechanics, and completing minor plumbing and mechanical repairs.
- Operates small electrical or gas-powered pumps; refuel, lubricate, and make minor adjustments; report malfunctions or breakdowns.
- Provides custodial services within public facilities, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, cleaning restrooms, and replenishing consumable supplies.
- Collects, transports, and disposes of trash, recyclables, and debris from buildings, parking areas, and grounds.
- Performs routine landscaping and ground maintenance utilizing hand tools and light equipment, such as push mowers, string trimmers, rakes, and backpack blowers.
- Performs manual labor such as digging, shoveling, spreading mulch or gravel, moving furniture, and site clean-up, and loads, unloads, and stages tools, materials, and supplies for maintenance or construction activities.
- Cleans, washes, and waxes vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Observes and reports maintenance issues, safety hazards, or equipment malfunctions to supervisors.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
High School Diploma or equivalent from an accredited institution.
OR
One year of experience performing semi-skilled labor, general building maintenance, mechanical repair, or trade helper related work.
Factor 1 – Knowledge Required by the Position- Knowledge of basic building, grounds, and facility maintenance methods, practices, tools, and equipment.
- Knowledge of workplace safety regulations and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Knowledge of basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, or electrical repair principles at a general maintenance level.
- Skill in operating hand tools, power tools, and maintenance equipment such as lawn mowers, weed trimmers, drills, and saws.
- Skill in identifying routine maintenance needs and determining appropriate corrective actions.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, work orders, and safety directives.
- Ability to follow established procedures and safety practices, and use required PPE.
- Ability to perform minor repairs and general upkeep tasks effectively and safely.
- Ability to maintain accurate records of work performed, supplies used, and equipment maintenance.
- Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with supervisors, co-workers, and the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and outside personnel.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team to complete assigned tasks.
- Ability to safely lift, move, and carry tools, materials, and equipment as required for maintenance activities.
Work is assigned by a supervisor who provides general instructions on tasks and priorities. The incumbent performs routine duties independently and refers complex or unusual issues to the supervisor. Work is reviewed for completeness, accuracy, adherence to safety standards, and overall effectiveness.
