Job Description Position Summary

The Back-Up Lead Custodian supports a safe, clean, healthy, and functional school environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role performs daily custodial and grounds duties and assumes Lead Custodian responsibilities whenever the Building Lead is unavailable. The position reports to the Custodial Lead ,
Building Principal , and Director of Facilities .

Key Responsibilities Building & Grounds Care
  • Maintain all interior and exterior areas according to the district’s Tasks & Frequencies schedule.
  • Clean and care for surfaces and equipment including windows, floors, furniture, fixtures, restrooms, dispensers, counters, drinking fountains, rugs, and classroom spaces.
  • Perform cleaning tasks such as sweeping, dusting, mopping, washing, vacuuming, collecting waste, and applying cleaning products.
  • Move furniture and equipment as needed for school activities.
  • Maintain grounds: sweeping, raking, mowing, debris removal, and seasonal upkeep.
Snow Removal
  • Shovel, sand, and clear walkways, steps, parking areas, and driveways.
  • Operate snow removal equipment (snow blowers, sweepers, tractors) when trained.
Safety & Security
  • Open and close the building daily; ensure all doors, windows, and lights are properly secured.
  • Check exit doors and panic hardware for proper operation.
  • Monitor door security throughout the shift.
  • Assist with annual fire equipment checks and general fire safety routines.
  • Understand and operate building alarm systems, water shutoffs, electrical panels, HVAC, and BMS systems.
  • Respond to emergencies according to building emergency plans and participate in required training.
  • Remain on site during authorized building use or emergency situations until relieved.
Maintenance & Operations
  • Perform minor repairs (e.g., hinges, railings, signage).
  • Report major repairs or damage and submit work orders through Operations Hero .
  • Follow all laws and procedures for proper waste storage and disposal.
  • Receive and distribute deliveries.
  • When the Lead Custodian is on leave, monitor supply inventory and assist with budget setup.
  • Raise performance concerns to the Lead Custodian as needed.
Professional Conduct
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, staff, and building operations.
  • Follow all Sharon Public Schools policies, practices, and procedures.
Qualifications
  • Ability to perform custodial, groundskeeping, and minor maintenance tasks calmly and logically.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to use and maintain custodial tools and equipment.
  • Professional appearance and conduct.
  • Experience working with diverse populations.
  • Punctual and reliable.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing work assignments.
  • Interest in problem solving and innovation.
  • Ability to compute basic ratios, percentages, and measurements.
Physical Requirements
  • Lift/carry 50–75 lbs independently.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Push, pull, stoop, crouch, reach, grasp, and handle materials.
  • Climb ladders, scaffolding, stairs, and inclined surfaces when required.
  • Tolerate exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions.
  • Perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
