Substitute Custodial (Substitute placement is an on-call, as needed basis).

Description

The role of the custodian is to perform routine cleaning, sanitizing, and basic, minor repair tasks to ensure the school facilities and grounds are clean, orderly, safe, and ready for daily operations, special events, and emergency needs. Custodians help protect the health and safety of students, staff, and visitors by following established cleaning protocols, supporting the school’s operations, and assisting in maintaining a positive and functional learning environment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS,

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure a clean, sanitary, and safe environment that supports the health, safety, and learning of students, staff, and community.
  • Maintain cleanliness of facilities, including sweep, mop, scrub, wash, vacuum, and dust floors, carpets, hallways, stairs, classrooms, offices, cafeteria, gymnasium, restrooms, workrooms, and other areas.
  • Regularly sanitize high-touch surfaces, including door knobs, handrails, light switches, desks, chairs, and other frequently touched surfaces.
  • Empty garbage and recycling, dispose of waste in designated collection areas, replace can liners.
  • Set up and tear down for events, move and arrange furniture, equipment, and supplies for meetings, assemblies, athletic events, facility usage agreements, and other school activities.
  • Inventory, restock, replenish, and monitor custodial supplies and light bulbs.
  • Prepare facilities for daily operations (depending on shift), including open gates, raise/lower flags, disarm alarm, unlock doors, turn on lights, ensure facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.
  • Secure building by locking doors and windows, turn off all nonessential lighting, turn on alarm, check for and report vandalism, unauthorized persons, or safety hazards.
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on custodial equipment, including vacuums, floor scrubbers, buffers, carpet cleaners, power washers, and other custodial equipment.
  • Strictly adhere to and follow all safety precautions and procedures, including personal protective equipment, handling chemicals, blood borne pathogens, and ladder safety.
  • Respond to emergency cleanup, including spills, accidents, bodily fluids, and other emergency clean-up situations promptly and safely.
  • Operate according to professional and ethical standards at all times. This includes maintaining a high degree of confidentiality, courtesy, cooperation, positive attitude, reliability, punctuality, accuracy, and efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by administrator(s), as applicable to this position.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Be at least 18 years of age
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Valid Washington State Driver’s License
    • Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance
    REQUIREMENTS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
    • Ability to perform manual labor and lift/carry or push/pull heavy and bulky items up to 75 lbs.
    • Ability to walk, stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, bend, or reach for extended durations, and occasionally work in inclement weather.
    • Ability to strictly adhere to and follow all safety precautions and procedures, including personal protective equipment, handling chemicals, blood borne pathogens, and ladder safety.
    • Ability to operate custodial tools and equipment, including hand tools, stepladders, vacuum cleaners, wet vacuums, carpet cleaners, buffers, pressure washers, and auto scrubbers.
    • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with frequent interruptions and changing priorities.
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to follow oral and written instruction, including safety data sheets and chemical labels.
