Preventive Maintenance Specialist, Department of Facility Operations (Upcounty)

Under general supervision, performs semi‑skilled work in operating and routinely servicing heating and cooling equipment and performing a variety of facilities maintenance duties at a small cluster of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) facilities. The work involves responsibility for the safe, efficient operation and routine servicing of building heating and cooling equipment, typically including central low‑pressure boilers, chillers and associated motors, pumps and fans.

Employees perform general maintenance work such as repair and replacement of doors, locks, shelves, lockers, desks, chairs and other fixtures and furniture found lled trades personnel perform more technical repairs. Employees respond to requests for building services from school staff and building service managers, and work with energy‑management staff in controlling and operating school heating and cooling equipment. Employees in this classification are considered emergency personnel and are required to report to buildings during inclement weather.

• Benefits information:

• Working knowledge of operating a moderately complex central low‑pressure heating system and related tools and safety codes.
• Ability to use PC graphics, spreadsheets, word processing and e‑mail.
• Ability to operate hydraulic lift and a variety of heating, ventilating, mechanical plant machinery.
• Skill in the use and care of common mechanical tools and lubricating equipment.
• Knowledge of and ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Experience in operation and routine servicing of an industrial‑type heating and ventilating system.
• Successful completion of the Plant Equipment Operations and Air Conditioning courses required.
• Other combinations of appropriate education and experience that provide necessary knowledge, abilities and skills.

Possession of a Plant Equipment Operations Certificate.

• Lifting and moving objects up to 50 lbs.
• Exposure to dirty spaces and minor injury risk.
• Must report to buildings during inclement weather and may be called to other locations for emergency assistance.
• Frequent overtime, night work or travel may be required.
• Uniforms provided; appropriate attire required.
• Must provide and update a current working telephone number to supervisor.
