Groundskeeper II​/Grade JX​/KX - FTE at Washington High School

Overview

The Sioux Falls School District serves a diverse population of over 25,000 students and strives to provide a safe and healthy learning environment. The Custodial team plays a vital role in maintaining these standards.

Groundskeeper II

• Maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, landscaping, sidewalks, steps, and entrances; keeps areas free of snow or ice.
• Removes bottles, trash, paper, and cans from the entire site.
• Marks fields and sites for athletic events.
• Maintains and repairs equipment and vehicles; reports needed repairs of equipment, furnishings, fixtures, building, and site; performs minor maintenance.
• Sweeps, dusts, and cleans surfaces and furniture; removes and disposes of trash; replenishes supplies; cleans and polishes all interior surfaces; cleans carpets and hard surface floor coverings; moves furniture as needed.
• Makes recommendations for supplies and equipment to the Building Custodial Manager.
• Works a revised schedule and substitutes for other custodial staff when necessary.
• Shares responsibility for holiday, extended day, and weekend activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Groundskeeper I

• Coordinates and directs summer part‑time lawn crews.
• All duties listed above for Groundskeeper II.
• Performs other duties as assigned by supervisors.

Experience Desired

• High School Diploma.

Physical Requirements

• Good physical health; ability to lift 75 pounds; climb to high and difficult places; work at those places.
• Constant standing and walking; frequent hand‑eye and mind‑eye coordination; bending, carrying, climbing, hearing, lifting, and stooping.
• Repetitive motions with wrists, hands, and fingers; occasional crawling and crouching.

Other Requirements

• Pass a test of aptitudes showing basic knowledge of the position and be certified by the state as a licensed herbicide and pesticide applicator.
• Current State Vehicle operator's license; ability to operate all vehicles in the district fleet safely.
• Insurable; ability to work unsupervised; good attendance; ability to communicate and follow written and oral direction.
• Demonstrate recognition of equipment malfunction; demonstrate positive attitude toward coworkers; work cooperatively and be willing to accept instructions and training.

Level JX – starting salary is $22.18 per hour;
Level KX – starting salary is $23.23 per hour. Starting 7/1/2026 pay increases to JX $22.55 per hour & KX $23.62 per hour.

• Pay day is the last working day of each month.
• Health, dental, and vision benefits are available for positions 20 hours per week or more.

Hours & FTE

• Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm with a 30‑minute unpaid break.
• 1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week, 12 months.
