Facility Custodian

The heartbeat of our church is to relentlessly reach the next person for Jesus. The Sioux Falls area is one of the fastest-growing cities in America. By 2031, we hope to reach 5% of Sioux Falls and the surrounding communities for Jesus. That 5% would be 12,500 people for Jesus!

The Facilities Custodian is responsible for helping maintain a clean, safe, welcoming, and well-functioning church facility and grounds. This position combines custodial duties, groundskeeping, seasonal maintenance, and basic building maintenance.

The ideal candidate is dependable, self-motivated, takes pride in their work, and is able to work independently while responding to the needs of the church and its ministries.

Custodial & Cleaning

• Clean and maintain church buildings, including classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, common areas, and other assigned spaces.
• Vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, sanitize, and perform other routine cleaning duties.
• Empty trash.
• Maintain appropriate cleaning supplies and notify leadership when supplies need to be replenished.
• Prepare facilities for worship services, meetings, classes, and special events, if needed.
• Help maintain a clean, orderly, and welcoming environment throughout the church.
• Mow and maintain lawns.
• Trim and grass, weeds, and shrubs.
• Perform seasonal yard maintenance and general outdoor cleanup.
• Maintain sidewalks, entrances, and outdoor areas so they remain clean, safe, and presentable.
• Assist with landscaping, planting, leaf removal, and other grounds projects as needed.

Snow & Ice Removal

• Remove snow from sidewalks, entrances, steps, and other designated areas.
• Apply salt or ice-melt products as needed to maintain safe walking surfaces.
• Assist with snow removal from parking areas and other areas as assigned.

Basic Maintenance & Repairs

• Perform basic building repairs and maintenance appropriate to the employee’s skill level.
• Replace light bulbs and perform other minor upkeep tasks.
• Assist with painting and touch-up projects.
• Help maintain doors, fixtures, furniture, equipment, and other church property.
• Identify maintenance issues and communicate larger or specialized repair needs to church leadership.
• Assist with facility improvement projects as needed.

Facility & Event Support

• Assist with setup and tear-down for church events, meetings, and special activities, if needed.
• Move and arrange tables, chairs, and other furniture as needed.
• Help ensure facilities are properly prepared before and restored following events.
• Provide general support for the ongoing operation and care of the church facility.

General Responsibilities

• Take ownership and pride in the appearance and condition of the church property.
• Properly use and care for church-owned tools, equipment, and supplies.
• Follow appropriate safety procedures when using cleaning products, tools, lawn equipment, and other equipment.
• Work cooperatively with church staff, volunteers, and ministry leaders.
• Perform other related duties as assigned. Communicate the vision & values of Embrace.

• Takes pride in maintaining a clean, safe, and well-kept facility.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors throughout the year.
• Ability to safely operate basic lawn equipment, hand tools, and cleaning equipment.
• Basic maintenance, custodial, landscaping, painting, or related experience preferred, but not required.
• Experience with general building maintenance or repair is a plus.
• Ability to communicate effectively and work well within a team.
• Willingness to learn new skills and take initiative.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and respond to changing facility needs.
