Summary
These positions are located on the Tongass National Forest / Ketchikan Misty Fjord Ranger District in Hyder, Alaska. The salary of the position will be adjusted to include a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).
Responsibilities- Assures recreation sites and areas with one or two major uses are operated and maintained in accordance with operation and maintenance plans.
- Schedules daily activities, establishes maintenance schedules, and inspects cleanup operations based on recreation operation and maintenance plans.
- Maintains and cleans developed sites, roadsides, and backcountry dispersed sites.
- Makes repairs to damaged facilities or closes areas of facilities when hazards cannot be promptly eliminated.
- Maintains recreation facilities such as toilets, road closure gates, hand pumps, water systems, picnic tables, fire rings, barriers, dumpsters, and other miscellaneous structures.
- Reports on conditions and use of sites and areas.
- Serves as inspector for recreation area cleanup and maintenance contracts.
- Maintains contact with and provides support to Campground Host(s).
- Serves as a unit fee collection officer, collects fees, counts, reconciles money collected, and ensures deposits are made appropriately.
- Inspects recreation areas, areas of concentrated public use, and special use permits for compliance with the permit and the management plans, public health, and safety.
- Performs safety hazard analyses of public recreation use areas and takes or recommends corrective action.
- Patrols wilderness to ensure areas are operated, used, and maintained in accordance with Wilderness Management Plan.
- Installs and maintains information boards, travel signs, regulatory signs, and other signs associated with recreation sites, travel management, and safety.
- Provides detailed information about recreation opportunities to Forest visitors and explains the Forest Service rules and regulations.
- Oversees the construction and maintenance of trails.
- Monitors the condition and use of trails.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education is not considered for eligibility requirements.
Requirements- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service or exempt.
- Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
- Subject to verification through the E-Verify employment verification check.
- Federal payments must be made by direct deposit to their financial institution (per Public Law 104-134).
- Willing to live/work in remote locations (volatile/unpredictable).
This position is temporary, not-to-exceed date, and may be extended. Appointments may end early due to lack of work or lack of funds. Background investigation and fingerprint check are required. Employment verification is conducted through E-Verify. The position is a non‑bargaining unit and not eligible for telework.
