Overview:

The Peer Advisor position is designed to provide support for the academic advising process, to assist students with basic advising questions, to connect Oakton students with academic success resources, and to promote services available within the Office of Advising, Transitions, and Student Success (OATSS). Peer advisors will work within the Enrollment Center at either the Des Plaines or Skokie campus and support students by answering common questions related to registration, course planning, advising and registration tools, as well as preparation for appointments with staff advisors.

Peer advisors will also spend time working outside of the Enrollment Center and virtually to promote and support OATSS services and programs.

Varies based on assignment, 10-15 hours a week Schedule Flexibility:
Student schedule will fluctuate during the academic year based on the department’s peak seasons, projects, and initiatives. Student will work with supervisor to determine a fixed schedule. Once approved/finalized, students are expected to follow through with their determined schedule with minimal adjustments. Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities and Learning Outcomes:

-Develop and maintain a fundamental understanding of academic policies and procedures, academic advising operations, and college resources. (CT, PF)

  • Assist students in understanding their U. Achieve degree/certificate evaluation, set up a Transferology account, and learn basic functions of the MyOakton Student Profile. (PF, LD, CM, EI)

  • Assist students in understanding the policies related to the course registration process. (CM, LD, EI)

  • Perform “front- line” operations within the Enrollment Center, including but not limited to checking students in for advising appointments, setting up follow‑up appointments, and assisting students in their preparation to meet with an advisor. (PF, CM, TC, EI)

  • Promote OATSS programs and services held virtually or on campus by “tabling” on Student Street at various points in the academic year. (LD, CM, EI)

  • Coordinate efforts (i.e. create and distribute flyers, create virtual invitations, reserve tables, place catering orders, etc.) to promote academic success campaigns throughout the academic year. (LD, CM, EI)

  • Participate in campus event as a representation of OATSS, including but not limited to Advising and Registration Workshop, Fall Fest, ARW follow‑up workshops, and Registration Rally. (TW, EI)

  • Participate in ongoing departmental projects as assigned by supervisor, including but not limited to data entry, program preparation, and running office‑related errands. (PF, TC)

  • Serve as a role model to Oakton students and as a positive representative of the Office of Advising, Transitions, and Student Success to all students and their families. (CD, CM, LD, EI)

  • Attend and participate in all scheduled Peer Advisor meetings and training. (CD, PF, TW)
