Our client is a privately owned real estate platform headquartered in Skokie, Illinois, with a national footprint of manufactured and mobile home communities. Their portfolio spans both all-ages and 55+ properties, and the long-term ownership approach is centered on stable operations, thoughtful investment, and affordable housing solutions for residents across the country.
As the portfolio continues to expand, we are adding a Controller to lead accounting operations and partner directly with senior leadership. This role offers broad responsibility, meaningful influence, and the opportunity to strengthen financial infrastructure within an entrepreneurial real estate environment.
The Controller will serve as the senior accounting leader, overseeing daily financial operations while also elevating systems, controls, and reporting. This position requires someone comfortable operating at both a strategic and hands‑on level, with deep experience in real estate and construction accounting. You will work closely with ownership and executive leadership, manage the accounting team, and ensure financial accuracy across a multi‑entity structure.
Responsibilities- Direct all accounting activities across multiple real estate entities
- Design and implement scalable accounting processes and reporting frameworks
- Strengthen internal controls and evaluate existing financial practices
- Maintain oversight of the general ledger, chart of accounts, and the close process
- Lead accounts payable operations and ensure timely, accurate processing
- Review and approve bank reconciliations across operating and escrow accounts
- Monitor cash flow, liquidity, and treasury‑related activities
- Oversee construction and development drawings, including documentation and cost tracking
- Review invoices, lien waivers, and draw schedules for accuracy and compliance
- Coordinate with external tax advisors and auditors
- Prepare and review financial statements for internal and external stakeholders
- Manage, mentor, and grow the accounting team
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 10+ years of progressive experience within real estate and construction accounting
- Proven leadership experience managing accounting teams
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and real estate accounting standards
- Advanced experience with Yardi and Excel
- Clear, confident communicator with strong analytical skills
- Highly organized with the ability to manage competing priorities
- Comfortable operating in a fast‑moving, growth‑oriented environment
