REPORTS TO: Associate Principal for Curriculum
POSITION OBJECTIVE: Provide school nursing services, including those with significant health needs, in order to promote student safety, wellness, access to learning, and compliance with School Code and Illinois Department of Public Health mandated student health requirements. The Certified School Nurse supports students with chronic health conditions, emergency medical needs, medication administration, health education, and care coordination. Services are delivered in alignment with IDEA, IEP/504 requirements, Illinois School Code, and district policies to ensure student well‑being and full participation in the educational environment.
MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree in Nursing, Public Health, or related field preferred
- Ability to assess student health needs, including chronic conditions, acute illness, injuries, and emergency situations
- Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, Illinois School Code, and Illinois Department of Public Health school health service requirements
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, support staff, families, administrators, and related service providers
- Ability to develop, implement, and monitor health plans, IEP/504 health components, and emergency action plans
- Ability to administer medications, perform nursing procedures, and manage medical equipment
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Strong organizational and time‑management skills
- Ability to respond calmly and effectively to medical, behavioral, or crisis situations
- Ability to use technology and data systems for documentation, reporting, and health record management
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and families
- Assumes active role in the formation, review and revision of health and wellness procedures, policies and functions of the school health program
- Conducts health assessments to determine student needs and eligibility for nursing‑related services
- Develops, maintains, and implements Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs), Emergency Action Plans (EAPs), and IEP/504 health components
- Provides direct nursing services including care of illness or injury, medication administration, treatments, and monitoring of chronic conditions
- Responds to illness, injuries, and medical emergencies in accordance with district protocols
- Supports student participation in school routines, activities, and learning environments
- Administers medication and completes treatments and procedures as ordered by the medical care provider and documents appropriately
- Adheres to the Illinois Nurse Practice Act
- Assists students with diabetes, seizure disorders, asthma, allergies, and other chronic conditions
- Provides health counseling and education to promote wellness, self‑advocacy, and independence
- Monitors communicable disease concerns and collaborates with public health agencies as needed
