Tax Attorney
We are seeking a strategic and detail-oriented Tax Attorney to join our growing tax controversy team. This role focuses on representing clients in complex federal and Illinois state tax disputes, including audits, administrative appeals, and select Tax Court matters. The ideal candidate is a strong legal writer and persuasive advocate who can develop clear case strategy, manage matters from inception through resolution, and confidently represent clients before taxing authorities.
This position offers meaningful client impact, sophisticated case work, and the opportunity to collaborate closely with accountants and other professionals in a fast-paced, high-level practice.
- Lead federal and Illinois state tax controversy matters, including IRS and state audits, administrative appeals, and select collections cases.
- Develop case strategy, identify key legal issues, and build clear factual narratives supported by documentation and applicable law.
- Draft and revise high-quality written work product, including:
- IDR responses and substantiation packages
- Position letters and legal memoranda
- Appeals protests and conference submissions
- Tax Court petitions, motions, and briefs
- Settlement communications and stipulations
- Represent clients in conferences with IRS examiners and Appeals Officers, and in hearings before the U.S. Tax Court as needed.
- Advise clients on risk exposure, potential outcomes, and strategic options.
- Collaborate with internal accountants and professionals to analyze financial records and strengthen evidentiary support.
- Manage case deadlines, client communications, and workflow with strong organizational discipline.
- Stay current on developments in tax procedure and controversy practice.
- J.D. from an accredited law school.
- Active bar license in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- Demonstrated strength in legal research and persuasive writing.
- Working knowledge of federal tax procedure and the tax controversy lifecycle.
- Strong oral advocacy and communication skills.
- Excellent judgment, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple active matters.
- Experience handling IRS examinations and Appeals conferences.
- Tax Court litigation or motion practice experience.
- State tax audits and appeals experience.
- Collections matters (liens, levies, installment agreements, offers in compromise), particularly when connected to pending disputes.
- Experience organizing large substantiation records and working closely with accountants or financial professionals.
- Competitive salary range: $100,000 - $150,000 (based on experience)
