The Patient Care Tech, under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practicing Nurse (LPN) and, according to established procedures, performs patient care tasks and patient care procedures necessary to provide for the care, comfort and safety of patients. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age(s) of the patients served on the assigned unit.
Responsibilitiesand Essential Functions
- Patient & Visitor Interactions / Customer Service / Hourly Rounding:
Interact with patients and visitors, answer patient call lights, answer phones, assist visitors within the facility, and perform purposeful hourly rounding on all assigned patients. - Patient Safe Handling / Ambulation / Repositioning:
Learn patient safe handling skills to assist in patient ambulation, transferring, lifting and/or repositioning patients using Safe Patient Handling equipment. - Basic Nursing Care – ADLs:
Assist patients with personal care needs including bathing, grooming, oral care, eating, feeding, use of bedpan or urinal, positioning, answering patient call lights, bed making, etc. under the supervision of a RN/LPN. - Admission / Discharge / Transfers:
Assist with room set‑up, welcoming new patients, room orientation, discharging and/or transfer of patients, and transport/escort patients to their destination while ensuring safety and updating them regularly. - Procedures and Treatments:
Accurately complete and document patient care activities (ADL, vital signs, weights, intake & output, calorie counts). Effectively explain and perform procedures such as urinary catheter removal, ECGs, wound care and dressing changes under the direction of the nurse. Collect non‑sterile specimens and perform point‑of‑care blood sugar testing. Promote skin integrity by reporting patient problems as they occur. - Care Companion / Sitter / Observer:
Remain with a patient as directed by the RN or LPN to keep the patient safe. - Department
Specific Tasks:
Support the nursing team with indirect patient care activities such as restocking equipment/linens, cleaning equipment, answering and relaying telephone calls, filing and maintaining records, retrieving and delivering supplies, specimens, instruments, test results, etc.
- Eligible to work in the US
- Accredited certified nursing assistant (CNA) training course preferred
- At least one nursing clinical rotation in medical or surgical nursing preferred
- Current BLS certification for the Healthcare Provider issued by the American Heart Association (must be obtained within 90 days of hire if not current).
- No experience required.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, teamwork, ability to prioritize and follow directions.
- Concern for and commitment to the welfare of patients and families.
- Attend in‑depth orientation regarding patient care skill tasks.
- Observe all fire and safety procedures and patient experience standards.
- Normal mental, visual, auditory attention required with manual dexterity for sustained periods.
- Visual acuity adequate to assess patients and read/record charts; auditory acuity adequate to converse while wearing masks.
- Potential exposure to blood, body fluids and other infectious materials, chemicals and hazardous conditions; may require PPE such as N95 mask/PAPR.
- Work under pressure to meet patient care needs.
Use appropriate patient movement equipment for patient‑lifting and transfers in non‑emergency situations; may need to assist with lifting up to 50 pounds in an urgent event.
Sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, push, pull, lift throughout the shift.
Technical SkillsBasic computer skills required.
