Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Introduction
The State of Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) is seeking a CDL Class A or Class B licensed individual to join our team as a Correctional Auto Mechanic at the Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers, CT.

Full‑time position on first shift:
Monday‑Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
- Repair and service maintenance of a large fleet of state‑owned vehicles, correctional transportation buses, and perimeter security vehicles.
- Maintain small engine utility vehicles, mowers, plows, sanders, snow blowers, and leaf blowers.
- Conduct vehicle inspections and ensure safety compliance.
- Document work performed and file reports.
- Collaborate with correctional staff to schedule maintenance and coordinate transport.
- Four years of experience in fleet vehicle maintenance, mechanical repair, or a related trade.
- Valid CDL Class A or Class B license.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Experience working in hazardous duty environments.
- Experience with heavy equipment repair.
- Experience with diesel repair.
- Experience with electronic work order systems.
- Experience training and supervising others.
- Experience with fleet vehicle maintenance.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or a Commercial Driver’s License.
- May be required to complete formal correctional work training.
- May be required to travel.
- Must have physical stamina and ability to lift heavy equipment.
A thorough background investigation of each candidate will be conducted and it will be required to verify references and facts stated in the application.
Physical RequirementsApplicants must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury that would impair performance, and possess sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance, visual and auditory acuity required to perform all duties. A comprehensive medical examination, including a controlled substance screening, will be required upon a conditional offer of employment.
Working ConditionsIncumbents may be exposed to danger or assault by inmates who have access to tools as weapons. Working conditions may involve loud machine noise, chemical fumes, and working with potentially dangerous machinery.
