Boathouse Manager
The Boathouse manager serves as the primary equipment manager and technical resource for Northeastern University's NCAA Division I men's and women's rowing programs. Responsible for the maintenance, rigging, repair, and inventory of all rowing equipment, the Boathouse Manager ensures that both programs operate safely, competitively, and efficiently throughout the academic year. This role requires close collaboration with coaching staffs, student-athletes, and athletics department personnel.
Responsibilities include:
- Rig, de-rig, maintain, and repair all shells, oars, and related rowing equipment for both the men's and women's programs.
- Maintain a complete and accurate inventory of all watercraft, oars, accessories, and spare parts.
- Assess equipment condition regularly; recommend and coordinate purchases, repairs, or replacements in consultation with coaches.
- Ensure all equipment meets safety standards and conference/NCAA regulations.
- Manage boat trailer loading, securing, and transport logistics for away regattas.
- Develop and maintain an off-season program covering replacement and maintenance strategy for all equipment, including but not limited to, rowing shells, oars, launches, rowing ergometers, trailers, and tow vehicles.
- Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the boathouse, dock, and storage areas.
- Perform routine maintenance on ergometers, launch motors, safety equipment, and other program assets.
- Coordinate with athletics facilities staff on boathouse upkeep and capital improvements.
- Operate and maintain motorized coaching launches in compliance with applicable regulations.
- Attend home and away regattas to manage equipment logistics, set-up, and on-site repairs.
- Coordinate boat and equipment shipping for championship and out-of-region competitions.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for equipment-related needs on regatta day.
- Assist head coaches in developing and managing the equipment budget.
- Maintain records of maintenance work, warranties, and vendor relationships.
- Solicit bids and manage relationships with boat builders, riggers, and equipment suppliers.
- Ensure compliance with university purchasing policies.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in rowing equipment management, boat rigging, or a closely related role.
- Strong working knowledge of rowing shell construction, rigging, and repair (sweep and sculling).
- Valid driver's license with experience towing trailers.
- Ability to operate motorized launches;
Massachusetts Boating License/Boating Safety Certificate required. - Strong mechanical aptitude and proficiency with hand and power tools.
- Ability to work early mornings, weekends, and occasional holidays as required by the practice and competition schedule.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and participate in physical tasks associated with boat handling.
- Experience in an NCAA Division I or elite club rowing program.
- Background as a competitive rower, coxswain, or coach.
- Familiarity with RP3 and Concept2 ergometer maintenance and calibration.
- Experience with carbon fiber and fiberglass repair techniques.
- Knowledge of CAD/rigging software or manufacturer rigging specifications.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Variable hours including early morning practices, weekends, and travel periods throughout the fall and spring competitive seasons.
- Outdoor work in all weather conditions; regular exposure to water environments.
- Physical demands include lifting, bending, climbing, and prolonged standing.
