Laborer; Department of Public Works

The Borough of Somerville Department of Public Works is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time laborer position. This is a 40-hour-per-week position represented by AFSCME with enrollment in PERS and eligibility for health benefits.

Under the direction of a supervisor, the successful candidate will perform a variety of manual labor, maintenance, construction, repair, and groundskeeping duties related to the operation and upkeep of Borough streets, sidewalks, parks, public buildings, grounds, and other municipal facilities.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors and may require exposure to varying weather conditions and environmental factors associated with public works operations.

• High school diploma or equivalent
• Valid New Jersey driver's license required
• CDL Class B license preferred or ability to obtain within a specified period
• 1 to 3 years of experience in public works, construction, grounds maintenance, facility maintenance, or related work preferred
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to work independently and safely
• Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position

Duties include, but are not limited to:

• Perform manual labor associated with the maintenance, repair, cleaning, and beautification of Borough streets, sidewalks, parks, parking lots, and public property
• Assist with roadway maintenance, paving, patching, grading, drainage repairs, and related public works activities
• Perform groundskeeping duties including mowing, trimming, landscaping, and vegetation control
• Clean and maintain public buildings, parks, restrooms, and municipal facilities
• Remove litter, debris, leaves, snow, and ice from Borough properties and rights-of-way
• Participate in snow and ice removal operations, including salting, sanding, shoveling, and plowing
• Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and light equipment
• Assist with installation and repair of signs, fencing, guardrails, and other public infrastructure
• Load, unload, transport, and store materials, equipment, and supplies
• Perform routine maintenance on Borough vehicles and equipment
• Assist skilled trades personnel with carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, masonry, and mechanical work
• Set up and break down facilities and equipment for Borough events and programs
• Attend required safety meetings, training programs, and certifications
• Respond to emergencies and weather-related events as required
• Perform other related duties as assigned

The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, and operation of tools and equipment. Employees may be required to lift and move materials and equipment in accordance with established safety procedures.

Starting salary: $42,000 annually

Compensation and benefits are provided in accordance with the applicable AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement.
