PHYSICAL PLANT (SB-PHYP-IUSBA)
Indiana University (IU) South Bend is seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Part-Time Custodian to help maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming campus environment. This position performs a variety of cleaning, sanitation, and light maintenance tasks to support academic buildings, offices, restrooms, and common areas. The custodian plays an essential role in daily campus operations and in maintaining health and safety standards.
Department-SpecificResponsibilities
- Clean and maintain campus buildings, including classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, and public spaces
- Sweep, mop, scrub, vacuum, and shampoo floors and carpets
- Clean windows, glass surfaces, fixtures, furniture, and equipment
- Empty trash and recycling and properly dispose of waste
- Mix and use cleaning solutions according to safety guidelines
- Strip, seal, wax, and polish floors as needed
- Assist with snow and ice removal near building entrances during inclement weather
- Lock, unlock, and secure campus buildings while maintaining awareness of safety concerns
- Identify and report maintenance or repair needs to supervisors
- Follow safe work practices, including procedures related to hazardous materials or biohazards
- Perform additional custodial duties as assigned
Required
- General knowledge at the high school level
Preferred
- Additional certifications in custodial services or safety
- Custodial or building maintenance experience
- Experience working in educational, healthcare, or large facility environments
- Familiarity with floor care, sanitation practices, and safety procedures
Required
- Knowledge of cleaning procedures, tools, and equipment
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Effective communication skills and professionalism
- Ability to work safely in environments involving cleaning chemicals and waste
This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position oneself in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections.
The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
This role requires the ability to perform medium to heavy physical work for extended periods.

4-hour shifts, Monday through Friday
Start time between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM
