Pipe Restorer
Looking for a trade where you take small, cherished pieces of history and, with hand tools and patient work, restore them for new owners. Smokingpipes, the world’s largest online retailer of pipes and pipe tobacco, is looking for a dedicated restorer to join our Restoration team.
Your role is to breathe life back into well‑loved pipes—diagnosing, cleaning, and refurbishing each one so it becomes a collector’s favorite again.
What you’ll actually doInspect and diagnose each pipe, then restore it with the care and accuracy that keeps collectors trusting us with their next purchase.
You’ll also:
- Write detailed condition statements that tell collectors exactly what they’re getting
- Research historically similar pipes for accurate reference
- Clean and refurbish estate pipes for resale using proven techniques that respect the piece
- Operate power tools including buffing machines and wood lathes
- Collaborate with management and teammates to prioritize workloads and hit deadlines
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized workspace
You don’t see a beat‑up pipe as “used” but rather as something that can be made beautiful again.
Over time you’ll understand the history behind each maker, the character of different materials, and how careful restoration decisions shape the final product years later.
We offer a landing pad where advanced restoration work, leadership roles, and other business opportunities are possible for those who show judgment and initiative.
You can expectCompetitive salary; health, dental, and vision insurance; six paid holidays; generous PTO; 401(k) with 1:1 match up to 4% and no vesting period.
Perks include casual dress, tuition reimbursement, referral bonuses, year‑end bonuses, fresh fruit daily, paid luncheons, and regular company events.
Culture: a passionate group that cares about products, customers, and each other. Reality check: you’ll work around tobacco and smoke, often in smoking areas.
What you’ll bringPrior pipe experience isn’t required; on‑site training covers it. What we look for:
- Intolerance for sloppiness—notice and fix every flaw
- Experience with hand tools and light machinery, and comfort working with delicate components
- Strong written and verbal communication—condition reports are key
- Reliability: on time, on site, focused daily
- Ability to work autonomously while taking direction when needed
- Comfort being on your feet and lifting up to 30 lbs regularly
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a criminal background check
Bonus: previous experience with pipes, pipe tobacco, pipe making, or restoration is a plus.
The bottom lineThis job isn’t for everyone. It’s for people who take pride in doing things right, who get frustrated by careless handling of historic pieces, and who want to be part of a team that holds the line for quality.
If you’re ready to make an impact where quality matters, we want to hear from you.
