Summary
The custodian position is a 3rd shift role responsible for cleaning and maintaining campus facilities, including restrooms, floors, furniture, windows, and building security. The job includes routine cleaning, floor care, equipment maintenance, and emergency response as needed.
Responsibilities – Essential Functions- Clean and sanitize restrooms and bathrooms using established practices.
- Clean, dust, and wipe furniture; sweep, mop, or vacuum floors; empty and clean wastebaskets, trash, and recycling containers; refill restroom dispensers; replace light bulbs with an 8‑ft ladder when necessary.
- Assist with the setup of facilities for meetings, classrooms, conferences, events, etc.
- Perform floor care such as stripping, cleaning, buffing, and applying sealer or finish to hard surface floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.
- Wash walls and equipment; use ladders when required for assignments.
- Lock and unlock assigned buildings: secure buildings when not in use, check for unlocked doors and windows, report unauthorized occupants, and turn off lights.
- Remove snow or debris from sidewalks and stairs within 25 feet of buildings using hand-operated tools or small power equipment.
- Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools, including buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high‑pressure washers, high‑speed buffers, vacuums, brooms, mops, and squeegees.
- Wash accessible interior and exterior windows; clean blinds; launder cleaning rags and dust mops.
- Attend classes as required in cleaning methods, new products, and working relationships.
- Handle recycling materials.
- Use email or the internet to request work orders from customer service.
- Assist with inventory control and security.
- Safely operate all vehicles and other job‑related equipment; hold a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Support and enforce all policies, university and governmental regulations, OSHA/MIOSHA rules, and university health and safety guidelines.
- Enforce policies established by the Assistant Vice President of Facilities.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Move furniture, equipment, supplies, and tools on an incidental basis.
- Attend to emergencies when necessary.
- Attend safety meetings and related meetings.
- Assist in the instruction and supervision of student help.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must be able to work any shift and day of the week.
- Excellent work performance and attendance record.
- Demonstrated ability to work with minimum supervision.
- Ability to work well with others and maintain positive customer service.
- Ability to follow instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies.
- Physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs, bend, twist, reach, and climb ladders up to 8 ft.
- Mental capabilities to maintain interpersonal skills, memory, attention to detail, follow directions, comprehension, reading, writing, speaking, evaluating, mathematics, organizing, and innovation.
- Must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Job Classification / RangeGrade 1, $18.02 per hour. Third shift position with an additional 0.40 per hour shift differential for regular hours worked.
