CUSTODIAL WORKERQualifications
- Ability to read and write and to be able to follow oral and written instructions.
- Lift up to 50 pounds.
- No formal education is required.
- The ability to do the work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Reports to:
Custodial Supervisor
- Cleans and sanitizes floors, walls, and furniture in offices and institutional buildings to meet sanitary regulation levels and enhance the appearance.
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms using chemicals and cleaning supplies to ensure sanitary conditions.
- Scrubs, mops, waxes, and polishes floors using dry and wet mops, wax applicators, and buffers to provide clean and neat areas.
- Collects and removes refuse from offices and buildings daily to ensure cleanliness.
- Moves and arranges furniture, lifting, carrying and sliding to provide an efficient and comfortable area.
- Removes snow from steps and sidewalks to ensure safe entrance to buildings.
- Reports repairs needed to the supervisor to prevent further repair expenses.
- Vacuums and shampoos carpets using vacuum cleaners and shampoo equipment to ensure cleanliness.
- Dusts and washes walls, woodwork, ceilings, and windows using dry and wet mops to provide a clean facility.
- Operates scrubbers, buffers, and other types of cleaning equipment.

Custodial Workers may assist in training entry level custodians in the use of various cleaning chemicals and how to arrange work schedules that will not interfere with the staff or students.
Challenges:A challenge facing the Custodial Worker is how to remove an unusual stain on a carpet or how to accomplish cleaning duties when large groups of people occupy the building 24 hours a day.
Control on Actions:Decisions made by the incumbent are what cleaning supplies to use for a cleaning job and to rearrange the daily work schedule if the need arises. Decisions referred to a superior are ordering of supplies and the need for repairs in the assigned area.
Contact with others:The incumbent has daily contact with the supervisor to receive duty assignments and daily contact with students/employees to clean the areas they are in.
Working Conditions:Custodial Workers are required to use various chemicals to clean and sanitize floors and fixtures. Incumbents occasionally work from ladders to perform cleaning duties or to replace light bulbs. Incumbents work on wet, slippery floors.
Performance Measurement:The Custodial Worker's performance is judged by a supervisor through visual inspections and by reviewing written work schedules.
Terms of employment:Twelve (12) Month. Salary, work and benefits to be established by the Board of Education.
Evaluation:Performance of this job is to be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of support services personnel.
