POSITION SUMMARY

The ASP Assistant II / Bus Monitor is designed for an individual who is currently pursuing a career in education and wants hands-on experience supporting students in an after-school learning environment. The position assists the Teacher/Instructor with tutoring, classroom activities, student supervision, and academic support, while also serving as a Bus Monitor during assigned student transportation. This role is ideal for a college student or teacher candidate studying Education or a closely related field.

ESSENTIAL

PROGRAM DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist the Teacher/Instructor with homework support, tutoring, small-group activities, and academic enrichment.
  • Provide individual support to students under the direction of the Teacher/Instructor.
  • Help prepare classroom materials, learning activities, supplies, and program spaces.
  • Reinforce classroom expectations and assist with positive behavior management and student transitions.
  • Maintain active supervision during classroom activities, recreation, snacks/meals, and dismissal.
  • Assist with attendance, check-in, authorized pickup, and other required program procedures.
  • Communicate student concerns, incidents, injuries, or unusual circumstances promptly to the Teacher/Instructor or program supervisor.
  • Model professionalism, patience, appropriate boundaries, and positive interactions with youth and families.
  • Participate in required meetings, training, and program activities and perform other related duties as assigned.
BUS MONITOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Report by 1:30 p.m. to support assigned student transportation before regular program activities begin.
  • Maintain or assist with transportation rosters and student headcounts when students board and exit the vehicle.
  • Monitor student behavior and reinforce transportation safety rules throughout the route.
  • Assist students with safe and orderly boarding and exiting and provide age-appropriate support when needed.
  • Immediately communicate safety, behavioral, or student-accountability concerns to the driver and program supervisor.
  • Help ensure students are released only according to established program procedures and approved locations.
  • Check the passenger area at the end of transportation to help ensure no student or belongings remain behind.
  • Do not operate the vehicle; avoid distracting the driver except when communication is necessary for student safety.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Interest in becoming a teacher and willingness to learn classroom management, instructional support, and student-engagement practices.
  • Ability to assist students with homework, reading, math, and other age-appropriate academic assignments.
  • Ability to safely and attentively supervise children in both classroom and transportation environments.
  • Strong communication, reliability, patience, professionalism, and sound judgment.
PREFERRED CANDIDATE PROFILE

Candidates should be interested in developing skills in tutoring, classroom management, lesson support, student engagement, and youth development.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Successful candidates may be required to complete applicable background screening, Mandated Reporter requirements, CPR/AED and First Aid training, transportation/Bus Monitor safety training, Township onboarding, and other youth-program requirements established by Thornton Township.
