Under the direction of a supervisor, the journeyman custodian performs general cleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds, keeps equipment functional, and provides custodial assistance to students, staff, teachers, administrators, and visitors as needed. They may help with building security by locking and unlocking doors when requested and perform final lock‑up of the building at night, including activating security systems.
Assigned work week and shift may vary. Attendance, punctuality, reliability, and regular attendance are essential functions. The position requires 16 hours of work during the winter break with additional paid time off to be used before July 31 of the subsequent calendar year.
- Assist with routine maintenance of school and district buildings.
- Check and secure the building at the beginning and end of each shift to ensure safety and cleanliness.
- Clean rooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other areas of the building according to district standards.
- Wash walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills; sanitize contact points.
- Maintain clean and sanitary restrooms.
- Fill soap, paper towel, toilet paper, and other dispensers.
- Mop or operate auto scrubbers.
- Extract or bonnet carpets.
- Assist with floor refinishing.
- Maintain grounds by mowing, edging lawns, removing snow, ice, debris, weeding, raking, watering, sweeping, and more.
- Remove graffiti and repair vandalism.
- Clean up garbage and repair furniture, lockers, doors, and small equipment.
- Perform minor repairs to windows, doors, switches, desks, tables, equipment, appliances, sinks, toilets, blinds, etc.
- Assemble new equipment and furniture.
- Prepare and set up rooms for meetings and activities; clean up afterward.
- Maintain swimming pools, including chemical maintenance, per outlined standards.
- Assist in operating mechanical systems.
- Help restrict access by locking and unlocking doors.
- Participate in building security after hours.
- Operate security systems and lock/unlock the building as required.
- Attend required apprenticeship classes and complete competency logs.
- Conduct duties to maintain an 80% or higher VEKTR inspection.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of operating and maintaining basic cleaning equipment such as buffers, extractors, and auto scrubbers.
- Ability to perform minor equipment adjustments.
- Understanding of cleaning solvent use and proper application.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures, including shelter-in-place, lockdown protocols, fire and earthquake drills, and building and grounds layouts for emergency shutdowns and vandalism.
- Ability to follow oral and written supervisor requests.
- Basic reading and math skills.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Required Prior ExperienceMinimum of one (1) year of successful, full‑time custodial or related experience.
Assigned Decision MakingMake decisions concerning the best way to accomplish tasks assigned by supervisors. Take direction well and work within specific guidelines. Offer suggestions but follow directions.
Interactions with OthersInteract positively with students, teachers, principals, custodians, and other district personnel. May also interact appropriately with parents, counselors, and police agencies.
Supervisory ResponsibilityMay supervise and provide assistance to hourly custodial employees.
Working EnvironmentWork inside and outside the building; conditions may involve hot and cold weather. Hazards include use of power equipment, ladders, scaffolds, mopping, buffers on wet floors, and handling chemicals. Frequent interruptions may occur; stress from disruptive students or groups may be experienced. Proper training is required for handling cleaning chemicals.
Physical Requirements- Speak and/or hear; stand, walk, reach, and stoop frequently; kneel and crouch occasionally; climb or balance as needed.
- Require good vision: close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.
- Ability to stand for long periods.
- Ability to lift or move up to 100 lbs.
