Under the direction of supervisor, performs general cleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds, maintains equipment in functional condition, and provides cleaning and custodial assistance to students, staff, teachers, administrators, visitors, and others, as necessary. May help with building security by locking/unlocking doors when requested and do final lock‑up of building at night including turning on security systems. Assigned work week and shift may vary.
Attendance, physical presence, and timeliness are required and are essential functions of this position. This position is required to work sixteen (16) hours during the district's winter break and receives sixteen (16) hours of additional paid time off that must be used before July 31 of the subsequent calendar year. The specific hours worked are coordinated with the school administration and other contract custodians to ensure coverage of the building throughout the break.
Functions
- Assists with routine maintenance of school and district buildings.
- Checks and secures building at the beginning and end of shift to ensure safety and cleanliness.
- Cleans rooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other areas according to district standards.
- Washes walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, sills, and touchpoints.
- Maintains, cleans, and sanitizes restrooms.
- Fills soap, paper towel, toilet paper, and other dispensers.
- Mops or runs auto scrubber.
- Extracts/bonnets carpets.
- Assists with floor refinishing.
- Maintains grounds, including mowing and edging lawns, removing snow, ice, debris, weeding, raking, watering, and sweeping.
- May remove graffiti and repair other acts of vandalism.
- Cleans up garbage, repairs furniture, lockers, doors, and small equipment.
- Performs minor repairs on windows, doors, switches, desk tables, equipment, appliances, sinks, toilets, blinds, etc.
- May assemble new equipment and furniture.
- Prepares and sets up rooms for meetings and activities and cleans up afterward.
- Maintains swimming pools, including chemical maintenance according to outlined standards.
- Helps maintain and operate mechanical systems.
- Assists in restricting access by locking and unlocking doors.
- Involved with security of building after hours.
- Turns on/off security and locks/unlocks the building.
- Attend all required apprenticeship classes and complete demonstrations and competency logs.
- Performs duties to maintain an 80% or higher VEKTR inspection.
- Other duties as assigned
- Knowledge of operating and maintaining basic cleaning equipment, including buffers, extractors, and auto scrubbers.
- Ability to perform minor equipment adjustments.
- Understanding of basic cleaning solvents and proper application.
- Understanding of emergency procedures such as shelter‑in‑place and lockdown protocols, fire and earthquake drills, building and grounds layouts for emergency shut‑offs and vandalism.
- Ability to follow oral and written requests from supervisor.
- Basic reading and math skills.
High school diploma or equivalent.
