Custodian 1 – On‑Call
LocationSpokane Veterans Home, Spokane, Washington
OverviewThe Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs seeks an On‑Call Custodian 1 to provide vital custodial services for our resident veterans.
Duties- Provide custodial cleaning service in assigned areas, resident rooms, common areas, and office spaces.
- Vacuum and extract carpets as required.
- Mop, disinfect, and strip and wax as required.
- Maintain baseboards free of dirt and wax buildup.
- Empty trash and maintain receptacles free of odors.
- Perform various housekeeping tasks.
- Keep toilets, urinals, sinks, and other fixtures clean and free of scale, film, and odors.
- Maintain elevators in a clean and streak‑free condition.
- Assist nursing and food service staff in cleaning dining room floors after each meal.
- Restock custodial cart with equipment and supplies necessary to perform assigned job duties.

- Excellent listening skills and ability to work productively with staff and residents from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to maintain quality, safety and infection control standards.
- Physical ability to perform required work.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment used for floors, walls, fixtures and furniture.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures for handling toxic materials.
- Knowledge of aseptic procedures and infection control related to custodial services.
- Ability to adopt work procedures to meet changing needs, inspect and evaluate custodial work, understand and apply written and oral directions, read instructions and procedures.
- Ability to make simple arithmetic calculations, interact effectively with others, follow safety policies and procedures.
- Operate floor care machines.
- Must speak, read, and write English.
Experience preferred in housekeeping, janitorial, building maintenance, or custodial work in a healthcare facility, hospital or nursing home.
Special Requirements- Must pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check before starting work and every two (2) years thereafter, per WDVA Policy 615.000.
- Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening per DVA policy 670.000.
- Must meet medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by Washington Industrial Safety and Occupational Health Act.
- Must maintain regular and reliable attendance, proper call‑in and call‑out, and be willing to work as needed.
- Must complete all mandatory training and orientation within mandated time frames.
- Must become familiar with and comply with DVA policies, procedures, and collective bargaining agreements applicable to the position.
- Must sign confidentiality statement.
- Candidates must possess work authorization that does not require employer sponsorship for a visa now or in the future.
Step L salary. Eligible for “Supplement Basic Shift Premium” of $1.00 per hour for 24/7 facilities, expiring June 29, 2027.
