Schedule: 8.0 hours/day, 260 days/year. Monday–Friday: 5:00 AM to 1:30 PM (4/10 during school break periods)

Salary: Level 2 Custodian – M&O Salary Schedule, hourly rate dependent on verified experience. Pay is annualized over 12 months.

Job Description

The Head Custodian & Small Equipment Repair position is responsible for overseeing the daily operation, cleanliness, general maintenance, and safety of the school facility, as well as maintaining and repairing small equipment. The role ensures that building systems and equipment function efficiently, performs routine cleaning, preventive maintenance, and minor repairs, manages supplies, supports building security, and maintains indoor and outdoor environments to support school operations.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current first aid certification or obtain one upon employment.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for up to six feet, and the ability to climb a ladder.
  • Successful completion of Washington State Patrol and FBI fingerprint background checks.
  • Employment eligibility verified through I‑9 documentation.
  • Completion of all district‑required training within 30 calendar days of hire.

  • Aptitude and competence for assigned responsibilities.
  • General knowledge of school electrical/mechanical operations.
  • Physical ability to perform all custodial tasks.

Essential Functions
  • Plans, organizes, and accomplishes work as scheduled.
  • Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel, and requisitions replacements in advance.
  • Trains new employees in proper cleaning and maintenance.
  • Regulates HVAC systems to maintain appropriate temperatures and efficient use of resources.
  • Shovels and de‑ices walks, driveways, and steps as needed.
  • Checks daily to ensure all exit doors and panic bolts function during occupancy.
  • Raises the United States flag at the beginning of each school day.
  • Sweeps, dusts, cleans corridors, classrooms, and whiteboards.
  • Scrubs and disinfects toilets, floors, sanitary fixtures, and drinking fountains daily.
  • Maintains all floors in a clean, attractive condition and in good repair.
  • Performs minor building repairs and small equipment maintenance.
  • Reports damage to school property to the principal immediately.
  • Remains on premises during scheduled work hours and authorized non‑school use time.
  • Opens building each school day and ensures all doors, windows, and lights are secured upon closing.
  • Conducts ongoing general maintenance, upkeep, and repair program.
  • Moves furniture or equipment as required.
  • Complies with local laws for disposal of trash and waste.
  • Conducts periodic inspections and safety tests of electrical installations.
  • Is familiar with materials and equipment used in building care.
  • Maintains building security as outlined by the principal.
  • Is familiar with outside group use procedures.
  • Washes windows within area of responsibility.
  • Ensures hallways and exits remain unobstructed during school.
  • Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean.
  • Diagnoses equipment issues, troubleshoots malfunctions, performs repairs, or coordinates service when needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands
  • Stand on feet for extended periods.
  • Perform work at various heights and at physically demanding tasks for an eight‑hour shift.
  • Lifts and carries up to 50 pounds for up to six feet.
