Shift: 1st Shift, 4:00 AM – 12:30 PM, Monday – Friday

Appointment Type: Full Time Regular, Non‑Exempt

Job Summary

The Custodian I performs semi‑skilled custodial services for University facilities following established procedures and guidelines in the maintenance of buildings, classrooms, offices, lavatories, restrooms, and associated areas, their furnishings and equipment using manual tools and electrically‑powered machines. Duties include moving furniture, providing cleaning for special events, removing snow/ice, and maintaining cleanliness and safety throughout campus.

Primary Duties
  • Performs regular floor, stairs, carpet, and upholstery maintenance using manual tools, powered machines, or equipment to sweep, vacuum, mop, strip, and wax floors.
  • Clean building furnishings by dusting, washing, or polishing office furniture and equipment.
  • Maintain lavatories, restrooms, showers, and locker rooms following prescribed cleaning procedures.
  • Clean classroom or meeting room furniture and equipment, including blackboards, whiteboards, and desks.
  • Clean interior walls, removing adhesives and graffiti.
  • Wash all interior and lower‑level exterior glass using pressure washers, foaming equipment, and other guidelines.
  • Remove trash and recyclable materials from assigned areas, transporting to dumpsters or recycling bins.
  • Use cleaning chemicals safely, wearing protective clothing and disposing or storing chemicals per specifications.
  • Unload delivery trucks or pick up cleaning supplies, transporting them to storage using hand trucks or vehicles.
  • Prepare classrooms, meeting rooms, auditoriums, arenas, and outdoor locations for special events by moving furniture, tarping floors, and setting up equipment.
  • Assist in accident prevention on snow or ice covered walkways by shoveling, sweeping, and spreading salt or chemicals.
  • Respond to emergency situations (water leaks, floods, bodily fluid spills, broken windows/doors) following prescribed procedures.
  • Check assigned areas for security and report any concerns to appropriate authorities.
  • Report damage to buildings, furnishings, equipment, or emergency conditions to immediate supervisor or Office of Safety and Transportation.
  • Depending on department, replace light bulbs, operate washers/driers, assist with repairs, and perform flood remediation.
  • Depending on department, clean outdoor entryways, loading docks, or areas around dumpsters using hand tools or power equipment.
  • Maintain custodial equipment by replacing belts, bagting, emptying receptacles, and storing properly.
  • Provide campus building location information to students, staff, or parents as needed.
  • Perform other essential duties as assigned.
Education

Completion of 10th grade is required. Significant custodial experience may substitute for formal education. A high school diploma or equivalent is preferred.

Experience

At least one year of custodial services experience, including knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment, and supplies, is required.

Skills

Must be able to read English sufficiently to understand written work orders, instructions, and chemical usage directions.

Effort &

Physical Requirements

Requires lifting and carrying supplies up to 75 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally, prolonged walking or standing, frequent bending, stooping, and reaching. Must be able to operate manual and electrically‑powered cleaning equipment, climb ladders or stairs, and access difficult areas. Some positions are essential during severe weather closures.

Other

Positions may be located in facilities requiring a “sensitive” designation. Job duties may involve exposure to hazardous chemicals; proper training in mixing, application, and disposal is mandatory.
