Position: IBEW Union Bid - Custodian I

Custodian I

This position is only available to current, regular, full-time employees of Missouri State University who are represented by the IBEW.

Shift: 1st Shift, 4:00 AM – 12:30 PM, Monday – Friday.

Responsibilities
  • Performs floor and stairs maintenance by using manual tools and equipment or operating powered floor machines to sweep, vacuum, mop, and strip and wax floors according to prescribed guidelines or specific directions.
  • Performs carpet and upholstery maintenance by using manual tools and equipment or operating powered carpet extractors, shampooers, vacuums, backpack vacuums, and using upholstery tools according to prescribed guidelines or specific directions.
  • Cleans building furnishings such as desks, chairs, tables, cabinets, bookcases, file cabinets, lamps, and other fixtures by dusting, washing, and/or polishing.
  • Ensures that lavatories, restrooms, showers, and locker rooms are clean and sanitary by following prescribed procedures, using chemicals, restocking paper products, and removing trash and waste.
  • Cleans classroom or meeting room furniture and equipment, dusts blackboards and erasers, washes whiteboards, aligns desks and chairs, mops floors, and removes all trash.
  • Cleans interior walls by removing adhesive tape, thumb tacks, paper pins, staples, and cleaning with wall cleaners to remove stains and graffiti.
  • Washes all interior and lower level exterior glass, including windows, mirrors, and door glass using pressure washers, foaming equipment, extension poles, ladders, glass cleaners, squeegees, or paper wipes.
  • Removes trash from assigned areas, collects from containers, transports to dumpsters, and empties them.
  • Removes recyclable materials from assigned areas, collects from labeled containers, transports to recycling dumpsters, and empties them, ensuring proper lockout.
  • Uses cleaning chemicals properly and safely by wearing prescribed protective clothing, masks, gloves, and boots, following written or verbal directions for mixing, applying, and disposing of chemicals.
  • Unloads delivery trucks or picks up cleaning supplies from the custodial storeroom or commercial vendors, carrying them with a hand truck or vehicle to storage.
  • Prepares classrooms, meeting rooms, auditoriums, arenas, and outdoor locations for special events by moving furniture, tarping floors, and setting up equipment following set‑up plans or verbal instructions.
  • Assists in preventing accidents from snow or ice by shoveling, sweeping, and spreading salt, sand, or chemicals on walkways and entrances.
  • Responds to emergency situations such as leaks, flooding, overflowing fixtures, bodily fluids, broken glass, following prescribed procedures.
  • Performs building, facility, and contents protection and security by checking assigned areas, locking/unlocking offices, and notifying authorities when security is jeopardized.
  • Reports damage to buildings, facilities, furnishings, and equipment or emergency conditions beyond capability by contacting the supervisor or Office of Safety and Transportation.
  • Depending on departmental assignment, may replace light bulbs, use disposal/recycling methods for bulbs, make beds, collect towels and linens, supply rooms, operate washers, dryers, irons, assist in repairs, or perform flood remediation in student living areas.
  • Depending on departmental assignment, may clean outdoor entryways, loading docks, or areas around dumpsters using hand tools and power equipment.
  • Performs routine maintenance of custodial equipment such as belt or bag replacement, emptying receptacles, and proper storage of equipment.
  • May provide information on campus building locations to students, staff, parents, or others and advise of unsafe conditions.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the assigned department by performing other essential duties as assigned.
