Job Description

About the Position

Springfield Public Schools seeks outstanding candidates for the position of Utility Maintenance Worker. This is an entry level position aimed at persons wanting to gain skills and grow with the Springfield School District. The successful candidate will provide maintenance and repair work on District buildings and facilities, to ensure the upkeep and safety of District property for students, staff, and community members.

There may also be the opportunity to acquire certifications or education in this position.

Salary and Benefits

The hourly range is $20.54 - $27.03 depending on education/experience plus a generous benefit plan.

The individual in this position works Monday-Friday from 6:00 a.m.

- 2:30 p.m.

Essential Functions

  • Assists with building maintenance and repairs including, but not limited to carpentry, painting, roofing, concrete finishing, hardware, glazing, floor and wall covering, sheet metal work, locksmith, and cabinetry. May also assist in plumbing, low voltage electrical, HVAC, computer-based building management system, equipment maintenance, fabrication, groundskeeping, snow and ice removal, and site security.
  • Assists in preparing surrounding area by covering with cloth or plastic to prevent messes.
  • Moving furniture, equipment, and other hardware as necessary to reach the entire surface of the project.
  • Assists in cleaning up supplies and replacing fixtures when the project is complete.
  • Prepares work sites and carries equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains and accounts for tools and equipment at work sites.
  • Completes appropriate logs, forms and paperwork as needed.
  • Assists in cleaning job sites at the end of the work day ensuring a safe environment for stakeholders.
  • Keeps walk ways, parking areas and entrances clean and clear of debris.
  • Operates vehicles, hand and power tools and other equipment at job sites and performs routine maintenance on tools.
  • Maintains indoor and outdoor lighting.
  • Works with accuracy and attention to detail and meets deadlines.
  • Assists or substitutes for other maintenance personnel, as necessary.
  • Other related duties may be assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) Certificates, Licenses, Registration & Other Requirements
  • Must hold a valid Oregon Driver’s License.
  • Ability to complete Safe Schools training/certifications
  • Ability to obtain a valid First Aid/CPR card.

Desired Qualifications

  • Completion of trade school or equivalent, with special training in one or more trades related to building maintenance or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (May be acquired through education, training, and/or experience.)

Knowledge of: District policies and procedures; hand tools associated with maintenance of motors, painting, and carpentry; plastering and papering techniques; associated use of maintenance and paint chemicals their storage and safe usage; methods and techniques of surface preparation and paint application; building maintenance and repair work, including methods, materials, and equipment used in skilled maintenance repair work; safety and first aid practices and procedures.

Skills to: read and understand instructions as well as directions for the proper mixture, use, and disposal/storage of cleaners, solvents, chemicals; orient and operate, tools, equipment, and machinery.

Ability to: understand and apply District and school policies and procedures; erect and disassemble scaffolding; maintain appropriate work attire; maintain regular and acceptable attendance and punctuality, as set forth in Board policy; greet stakeholders; provide information pertaining to area and/or District/School policies; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work and from diverse backgrounds; interacts thoughtfully and courteously with students, staff, parents, and community members and resolves conflict in a professional manner;

maintain records; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; utilize appropriate grammar and spelling when corresponding, make mathematical calculations accurately; follow oral and written instructions; accurately research various information and prepare related reports.
