Job Overview
The Custodian will maintain the physical and cleaning needs of the District's buildings by performing routine and moderate to heavy manual work. This incumbent will ensure that all District buildings assigned are in a condition of operating excellence and cleanliness, providing safe, comfortable and healthy environments for students, teachers, staff and visitors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Sweep, wet and dry mop, buff and wax floors and participate in floor stripping
- Vacuum and shampoo carpet, removing stains and sanitizing
- Clean and sanitize restroom floors, common areas, classrooms, etc.
- Use various tools to remove scuff marks from floors in rooms and halls
- Operate custodial equipment such as mops, 2-speed and high speed buffers, wet/dry vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, water and carpet extractors, carpet blowers, spotters and ride/walk behind automatic floor scrubber
- Clean and sanitize walls, sinks, urinals and commodes; remove wall spots and stains
- Clean windows and mirrors as well as baseboards
- Clean, wash and/or polish cafeteria tables, counter tops and fixtures
- Dust furniture, desks, woodwork and blinds, counter and table tops
- Wipe down chalkboards/whiteboards
- Remove paper, trash and garbage from assigned areas and place in proper containers for disposal
- Replace toilet paper, towels and soap
- Maintain grounds around buildings, pick up paper, cans, trash and debris; clean sidewalks, driveways and parking lots and play areas
- Utilize Kaivac restroom cleaning machine, chair dolly, computers, washer and dryer, pressure washer, two-way communication device, and other various janitorial equipment
- Perform walk through using established procedures for locking, checking and safeguarding facility, including turning off lights
- Move and arrange furniture and boxes
- Set up/take down chairs and tables daily in the cafeteria and as needed for events
- Report any maintenance problems and/or unauthorized people in building
- Assist with minor repairs such as replace pencil sharpeners, adjusting desks, open students lockers, open/close valves, etc.

- High School Diploma or GED preferred
- Ability to work various shifts and locations within the school district and some after-hours and weekend rentals, if applicable
- Ability to properly handle multiple types of cleaning materials
- Ability to work collaboratively with others and take directions from supervisors
- Ability to use and manipulate various types of operational equipment with or without supervision
- Ability to carry equipment such as vacuums on back
- Ability to read, write and follow oral and written procedures in English
- Ability to use some hand tools and climb ladders
Work involves occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds. The employee may be required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, talk or hear. Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required.
Work involves daily risks and discomforts requiring normal safety precautions. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must maintain emotional control under stress.
- Work requires sufficient physical strength, agility, dexterity, and hand-eye-foot coordination to perform all essential tasks, including operating custodian equipment, lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds, pushing and pulling equipment weighing up to 70 pounds, reaching in front of body and stretching overhead. Employee is exposed to potential chemical hazards and toxic substances when using cleaning liquids, solvents and solutions, to potential biological hazards when cleaning restrooms, and to potential physical hazards when operating custodian equipment.
Work also exposes employee to dust, fumes and occasionally adverse weather conditions. Work requires frequent use of safety clothing and equipment and compliance with safety procedures. Use of propane gas and battery operated equipment. Most positions require work during evening/night shifts.
