Job Summary:
To provide academic support to students who are English Language Learners to help them transition to speaking, reading and writing the English language.
Essential Functions:
- Conduct assessments and identify students for the Program.
- Develop program curriculum.
- Instructs students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Develops and uses instructional materials suitable for verbal or visual instruction of English Language Learner students.
- Provides individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and help the students make a satisfactory transition to a regular classroom.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve effective participation in all activities.
- Evaluates students' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records.
- Communicates with parents through a variety of means.
- Holds parent conferences to discuss the individual student's progress and interprets the school program.
- Communicates with classroom teachers regarding the Program and student information.
- Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
- Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.

Physical Activity:
The role requires frequent walking and standing.
Work Environment:
The work environment is generally stable, with minimal exposure to unusual temperatures, noise, or hazards. The position requires extended and non-traditional hours to fulfill job duties, as well as participation in organization-sponsored events and meetings.
Qualifications:
Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with:
Bilingual Education endorsement or ESL endorsement. Valid Illinois Teacher's License (PEL).
Terms of Employment:
All terms of employment are outlined by the collective bargaining agreement with the Steger Education Association.
Evaluation:
The performance of this role is evaluated according to the Board's policy on evaluating professional personnel.
