Head Custodian – Job

Position Summary

The Head Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, secure, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. This role leads custodial operations, coordinates cleaning schedules, and supports facility events and emergencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Building Maintenance & Custodial Services
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and other school facilities.
  • Perform daily, weekly, and seasonal cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting.
  • Monitor building conditions and report maintenance concerns promptly.
  • Perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance as assigned.
  • Ensure all custodial equipment is properly maintained and safely operated.
Leadership & Coordination
  • Serve as the lead custodian for the building.
  • Assist in assigning and coordinating work schedules and duties of custodial staff as directed.
  • Train and support custodial staff on proper cleaning procedures and safety practices.
  • Maintain inventory of custodial supplies and submit requests for replenishment.
Safety & Security
  • Open and secure the building according to district procedures.
  • Conduct routine inspections of facilities for safety hazards.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness and response activities.
  • Maintain compliance with district safety protocols, chemical handling procedures, and OSHA requirements.
Grounds & Event Support
  • Assist with snow removal, ice mitigation, and grounds upkeep.
  • Prepare facilities for school events, athletic activities, meetings, and community use.
  • Set up and tear down tables, chairs, and equipment as needed.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain positive working relationships with students, staff, and community members.
  • Participate in required training and professional development.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly and perform physical labor.
  • Knowledge of custodial methods, equipment, and cleaning chemicals.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred
  • Previous custodial or facilities maintenance experience.
  • Experience supervising or leading staff.
  • Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or general maintenance repairs.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and climbing.
  • Ability to work around cleaning chemicals and equipment.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Working Conditions
  • Climbing, kneeling, exposure to electrical shock, heavy lifting (up to 100 lbs.), exposure to weather, near and far acuity, reaching, field of vision, hearing.
