* 40 Hours per Week
* School building and shift placement may change temporarily or permanently depending on district need, in accordance with protocol outlined in the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement. The schedule listed above is for the school year only, summer schedules are typically M-F 8a-4p, as communicated by the district.
COMPENSATION:
Starting at $18.63 per hour, commensurate with education and experience, plus benefits in accordance with the current AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement. Benefits include: Medical, dental, vision, paid holidays, paid time off, retirement benefits, and opportunities for advancement in accordance with the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Berkley School District is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Afternoon Custodian to help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, families, and community members.
The successful candidate will perform a variety of custodial, cleaning, maintenance, and event-support duties while ensuring assigned facilities meet district standards for cleanliness, safety, and security. This position requires the ability to work independently, communicate effectively, and contribute positively to the overall operation of the school district.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Building Cleaning and Maintenance
- Sweep, vacuum, mop, and maintain floors throughout assigned areas.
- Dust classrooms, offices, lockers, furniture, and other surfaces.
- Empty and dispose of trash and recycling materials.
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, urinals, sinks, partitions, and floors.
- Replenish restroom supplies, including paper products and soap.
- Clean whiteboards, windows, doors, entryways, and other building surfaces as needed.
- Maintain a high standard of cleanliness, sanitation, and appearance throughout assigned areas.
- Perform basic maintenance and care of custodial equipment, including vacuum cleaners and related equipment.
- Identify and report maintenance, repair, safety, or custodial concerns to the Head Custodian.
- Conduct nightly building safety and security checks.
- Secure assigned areas and ensure doors, windows, and building systems are properly monitored.
- Report safety concerns, hazards, vandalism, or unusual activity promptly.
- Follow district safety procedures and applicable workplace regulations.
- Set up and tear down furniture, equipment, and materials for school and community events.
- Clean and restore facilities following events and activities.
- Assist with moving equipment, supplies, and materials as needed.
- Support district operations during special events, emergencies, and other activities.
- Assist with snow removal, ice mitigation, and other weather-related responsibilities as assigned.
- Participate in district-wide summer cleaning and deep-cleaning projects.
- Support building and grounds maintenance activities as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Custodian, Facilities Department, or administration.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Ability to understand, communicate, read, and follow instructions in English.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff, students, and community members.
- Ability to perform physical work, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and perform repetitive physical tasks throughout the workday.
- Demonstrated reliability, punctuality, and strong attendance.
- Successful completion of required background screening and pre-employment requirements.
- Previous custodial, facilities, maintenance, or cleaning experience.
- Knowledge of custodial equipment, cleaning methods, and sanitation practices.
- Experience working in a school, public facility, or similar environment.
