Supervising Janitor – Stony Brook Medicine, Full‑time, Day Shift (6:00 am‑2:30 pm). Job Number: 2600278.
Position SummaryAt Stony Brook Medicine, Janitors are responsible for cleaning, maintenance, and care of hospital and surrounding grounds. Supervising Janitors manage custodial program, staff, inventory, inspections, and budget.
Responsibilities- Supervises and administers systematic cleaning and care of assigned building areas or the entire program in accordance with established guidelines.
- Plans and schedules staff assignments and cleaning services; reassigns staff to ensure work is accomplished according to schedule and that staff is fully utilized; shifts personnel to handle emergency cleaning, maintenance, and care projects.
- Supervises custodial program inventory system, including requisitioning and proper distribution and control of new cleaning equipment and supplies.
- Supervises unskilled maintenance and repairs to buildings and equipment, and requests semiskilled or skilled trades staff as necessary.
- Inspects buildings and assigned areas for compliance with cleaning guidelines; investigates complaints of unsatisfactory cleaning performance and takes corrective action.
- Prepares a portion or the entire annual equipment, supplies, and personnel budget for the custodial operation.
- Evaluates and makes recommendations for equipment, changes in cleaning methods, and work performance standards to ensure a more effective and efficient cleaning program.
- Promotion:
One year experience as Janitor, Housekeeper, Supervising Housekeeper, Supervising Building Services Aide or Building Services Assistant 2. - Minimum (NY HELPS):
Two years full‑time custodial experience, with at least one year at supervisory level. - Preferred:
Previous experience in a hospital setting; excellent intrapersonal and time‑management skills; attention to detail; ability to work with all levels of the organization.
- Pre‑employment physical exam and medical clearance.
- Electronic reference check (minimum 3 professional references).
- 4‑panel drug screen.
- Regulatory requirements for pre‑employment screenings.
- New York State license(s)/certificate(s) if required.
Salary Range: $47,695 per year (SG11). Annual supplemental pay:
Location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full‑time positions ($4,000). Stony Brook University Hospital provides generous leave, health plans, and a state pension.
