Job Summary:

To perform general maintenance and repair work on the Otero County Detention Center. To perform a variety of technical duties relative to assigned area of responsibility.

• Perform a variety of building maintenance duties including routine plumbing, electrical, and HVAC activities; maintain electrical and plumbing fixtures.
• Inspect building and facility for damage, vandalism and unauthorized use.
• Clean and maintain equipment.
• Supervise inmates on a full range of custodial duties.
• Maintain records and logs of work performed.
• Replace burned out and defective florescent tubes and light bulbs; replace burned out ballasts and broken light switches.
• Repair and maintain security equipment and program door locks.
• Repair and troubleshoot kitchen equipment.
• Order supplies needed for repairs and maintenance.
• Repair and maintain all laundry equipment.
• Perform facility welding tasks and repairs.
• Repair bathroom plumbing fixtures; replace or repair leaking faucets and damaged lavatory sinks; unclog toilets, shower and sink drains.
• Remain on-call for emergencies as required.
• Other duties as required.

• Hand and power tools used in routine mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry work.
• Construction materials, supplies and methods.
• Basic principles of heating and cooling systems.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

• Strong written and oral communications and relational skills.
• Follow and relay complex oral and written instructions, policies, and procedures.
• Operate a variety of office equipment, including computer terminal, related software programs, printer, calculator, fax, and copier.

• Learn electrical control panels and security systems.
• Perform the general maintenance and repair of small power equipment.
• Perform basic carpentry, plumbing electrical, and mechanical work.
• Work independently in the absence of supervision.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

• Essential and marginal functions may require maintain physical condition necessary for light to moderate lifting, walking, climbing, or standing for prolonged periods of time, and operating motorized vehicles.

Work Environment:
Travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, high voltage, grease, paint, various solvents, inmate’s body fluids, waste, and infectious materials.
