Day to day as a Safety Technician

As a Safety Technician at Fraser Shipyards, you will be an essential member of our safety team, providing critical support on projects and daily work procedures focused on Safety, Health, and Environmental standards. Your role will involve anticipating and evaluating hazardous conditions while implementing safety programs to prevent employee injuries and illnesses. You will assist in monitoring safety compliance, facilitate training sessions, and conduct job hazard analyses at various job sites.

Requirements include the ability to climb scaffolds and enter confined spaces, ensuring health and environmental risks are minimized. Collaborating closely with employees and management, you will guide safe practices and participate in incident investigations to enhance workplace safety.

Additionally, you’ll support customer safety initiatives and maintain compliance with OSHA and DOT regulations.

What you need to be successful
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey safety protocols and collaborate with team members and customers
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills to foster a safety‑focused culture
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail for managing multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities to assess hazards and implement effective measures
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiarity with OSHA and DOT regulations
  • High school diploma or GED required; degree in safety or industrial health preferred
  • Experience in the maritime or shipyard industry (preferred)
  • Forklift operation experience (a plus)
  • Physical ability to work in various conditions, including confined spaces and inclement weather
Additional Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to work the 2nd shift and overtime as required
  • Perform various physical tasks including grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, crawling, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, and working overhead
  • Comfortable working in confined spaces, such as manholes, and maintaining awkward positions for extended periods
  • Capable of performing indoor and outdoor work in varying temperatures and weather conditions; must be able to work in areas that may not be environmentally controlled
  • Ability to lift, move, push, or pull up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to sit for extended periods, particularly when working at a desk or on a computer
  • Must have listening and hearing ability as well as visual acuity to safely navigate shipyard environment
  • Must be able to drive company vehicles and maintain a current and valid driver’s license
  • Ability to speak effectively in front of large groups
  • Ability to lead by example and hold employees accountable when not following company safety requirements
  • May be required to conduct minor maintenance tasks in shipyard facilities, using various hand and power tools
