The Emanuel County Public Works Department periodically hires for positions across several divisions, including the Road Department, County Shop, Buildings & Facilities Maintenance, Transfer Station, and Solid Waste. These roles support a wide range of essential services, spanning from roadwork and drainage to vehicle repair and waste collection.

LocationAll Public Works positions are based out of the Emanuel County Shop, Transfer Station, or various county job sites. Daily posts may vary depending on the specific role for which candidates are hired.
Out-of-county travel is not required for Public Works positions. If travel becomes necessary, departments with county vehicles (such as Public Works) may provide one. If a county vehicle is not available or the department does not maintain a fleet, use of a personal vehicle may be required. In those cases, mileage reimbursement will be provided in accordance with county policy.
Applicants in this pool may be considered for positions reporting to one or more of the following superiors:
- County Administrator
- Public Works Director
- Fleet Maintenance Superintendent
While job duties will vary depending for the role to which the applicant is hired, responsibilities may include:
Equipment OperationOperates heavy machinery, tractors, and commercial vehicles to support county services such as road maintenance, solid waste collection, equipment transport, and facility upkeep. Follows operational and safety guidelines during use.
Manual Labor and Road MaintenancePerforms physically demanding tasks including patching, grading, ditch clearing, compacting, debris removal, and storm response. Assists with construction and repair of county infrastructure.
Preventive Maintenance and InspectionsConducts basic service checks and routine inspections on vehicles, machinery, and tools. Reports maintenance needs and assists with light repairs to ensure safe operation.
Drainage and Infrastructure ProjectsAssists with installation, repair, and cleaning of drainage systems, culverts, and roadways. Supports the preparation and restoration of work sites for small- and large-scale projects.
Facilities and Grounds SupportProvides labor and maintenance assistance across county buildings and grounds. Supports general upkeep, tool inventory, and facility repair work.
Emergency Response and RecoveryParticipates in after-hours or weekend operations related to weather events, road blockages, or urgent public works issues. Follows established emergency protocols.
Safety and ComplianceMaintains awareness of all job‑specific safety practices and personal protective equipment (PPE) standards. Follows county regulations and contributes to a safe working environment.
Works closely with other public works staff, county departments, vendors, and contractors to accomplish daily tasks. Responds to supervisory instructions and participates in team‑based projects.
Other Duties as AssignedPerforms additional duties as assigned in support of Emanuel County Public Works.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
OR equivalent experience in construction, maintenance, equipment operation, or other related field - Ability to follow verbal and written instructions

- Must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions if necessary
