Summary
The Crew Leader, Custodian will perform daily cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assigned tasks in order to provide a safe and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities.
Supervisory ExpectationsManage assigned clerical staff and subordinate professional personnel in one or more sections of the department. Take responsibility for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of assigned teams. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the district’s policies and applicable state and federal laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees;
addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance. Physical presence is expected as part of a reliable and predictable pattern of attendance.

- Maintain the professional knowledge and skills necessary to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of their positions.
- Sweeps, mops, scrubs, waxes and burnish floors, as well as vacuum and shampoo carpets; cleans, sanitizes, and stocks restrooms; cleans and dusts all horizontal and vertical surfaces; removes and disposes of waste products daily; maintains clean custodial closets.
- Performs minor non‑cleaning maintenance tasks of facility (e.g., changes light bulbs, toilets, unclogs toilets, changes ceiling tiles, touches up paint, secures windows, delivers supplies, sets up for facility activities, meetings, conferences, assembles and moves furniture).
- Follows a lawn and facility maintenance program, which includes mowing (pushing and/or riding), weeding, edging, trimming, fertilizing, minor plant replacement, mulching, blowing off sidewalks/curbs, watering, pressure washing, and graffiti removal, as appropriate.
- Opens, closes, and secures the facility—including gates, doors, windows, and alarm systems; turns lights on and off; ensures grounds and facility are free of debris and hazards; responds to emergencies by securing the perimeter.
- Performs work duties independently and/or as part of a custodial crew; works cooperatively in group situations; exhibits tact and consideration; maintains a positive outlook and pleasant manner; offers assistance and support to co‑workers; works actively to resolve conflicts.
- Supervises assigned personnel, monitors staff performance, and makes immediate improvements.
- Prepares all required reports.
- Performs basic computer skills.
- Performs the duties and responsibilities of the head custodian in the event of absence, vacancy, or as directed.
- Possesses basic comprehensive skills of the working English language.
- Performs any other duties as assigned.

extreme cold, extreme heat, wet/humid, noise intensity moderate; work with cleaning chemicals—wear eye protection; vibration/impact; work with or near heavy equipment; proximity to moving mechanical parts; exposure to electrical shock, fumes, or airborne particles.
Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in large‑scale housekeeping and yard maintenance with one (1) year of related management or supervisory experience required.
Certificates / Licenses / RegistrationsAll new and current employees are highly encouraged to complete the Custodial Operations Career Advancement training program through Hillsborough County Public Schools.
Language SkillsReads and interprets documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure manuals. Writes routine reports and correspondence. Speaks effectively before groups of individuals.
