Summary

The Custodian, Substitute is a non-permanent on-call position who will perform daily cleaning, minor maintenance, yard duties, and assigned tasks in order to provide a clean and healthy learning environment in all school district facilities.

Responsibilities
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, wax, and burnish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets; clean, sanitize, and stock restrooms; clean and dust all horizontal and vertical surfaces; remove and dispose of waste products daily; maintain clean custodial closets.
  • Perform minor non-cleaning maintenance tasks of the facility (e.g., change light bulbs, change toilet seats, unclog toilets, change ceiling tiles, touch up paint, secure window(s), deliver supplies, set up for facility activities, meetings, conferences, assemble and move furniture, etc.).
  • Follow lawn and facility maintenance program, including mowing, weeding, edging, trimming, fertilizing, minor plant replacement, mulching, blowing off sidewalks/curbs, watering, pressure washing, and graffiti removal as appropriate.
  • Assist custodial staff to close and secure the facility; turn on/off all lights; ensure grounds and facility are free of debris and hazards.
  • Perform duties independently or as part of a custodial crew; work cooperatively in group situations with tact, consideration, and a positive, pleasant manner; offer assistance and support to co-workers; work actively to resolve conflicts.
  • Possess basic comprehensive skills in the working English language.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
  • Experience:

    one (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in large-scale housekeeping, custodial, or building and grounds maintenance work.
  • Certificates/Licenses/Registrations: possession of a valid Florida Class “E” driver’s license; successful completion of mandatory non-compensated training for the substitute custodian.
  • Language skills: read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations; possess basic comprehensive skills of the working English language.
  • Mathematical skills: add and subtract two-digit numbers; multiply and divide with tens and hundreds; perform operations using US currency and weight, volume, and distance measurements.
