The Custodian II is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and sanitary environment in the Terrell State Hospital. This role involves cleaning, dusting, disinfecting, and operating floor‑maintenance equipment, as well as assisting with minor repairs and building inspections. The position supports general maintenance of indoor and outdoor areas and participates in disaster response or continuity of operations when required.
Responsibilities- Clean, dust, disinfect, and sanitize all assigned areas including floors, restrooms, nurses’ stations, and environmental services rooms.
- Operate floor maintenance equipment such as floor strippers, buffers, vacuums, and extractors.
- Request and restock cleaning supplies and maintain inventory records.
- Assist in conducting building and equipment inspections for cleanliness and needed repairs.
- Perform minor building and equipment repairs and installations under supervision.
- Maintain custodial equipment in good working order.
- Maintain outdoor areas around the hospital, clear trash and debris.
- Complete documentation and reports accurately and in a timely manner.
- Co‑coach other custodians as needed.
- Assist with disaster response or continuity of operations activities when required, which may involve alternate shift or location assignments.
- Perform other duties as assigned, including potentially evening, night, or weekend work for which additional pay may be earned.
- Attend work on a regular basis and follow the scheduled shift pattern or rotating/extended shift as required.
- Perform custodial functions in a timely manner and maintain high quality of cleaning and sanitation.
- Inspect assigned areas for cleanliness, completed work, and needed repairs; perform minor maintenance.
- Document work results accurately and protect confidential information.
- Maintain inventory and equipment records.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards, and sanitation regulations.
- Knowledge of infection control principles and methods.
- Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
- Skill in using custodial equipment, materials, and safe handling of chemicals.
- Skill in using and maintaining building maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to stay on task and complete work on time.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand or walk on hard floors for extended periods.
- Ability to work harmoniously and productively with co‑workers and patients.
- Ability to work irregular hours.
- Six months of work experience in custodial or environmental services, preferably in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel, or similar environment.
- Minimum age 18 years (21 years for certain centers).
- Ability to comply with the HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to required vaccinations.
- Must successfully complete a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and other registry checks.
- Flexibility for overtime and irregular work hours.
- Males aged 18‑25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
- Applicants must be eligible for work in a state‑operated facility. All applicants must bring I‑9 documentation to the first day of work.
- Active‑Duty military, reservists, guardsmen, and veterans are encouraged to apply if qualified.
- The position may involve participation in disaster response or continuity operations which could require alternate shift or location assignments.
This position is not eligible for telework. All HHS positions are subject to state and agency telework policies and the discretion of the direct supervisor and business needs.
