Job PurposePerforms moderately complex custodial work for assigned locations including office buildings and resident living units. Cleans, dusts, disinfects, and sanitizes to maintain a safe and healthy environment. Operates floor maintenance equipment. Replenishes supplies and assists in inspections and minor repairs. Trains other custodians as needed. Maintains custodial equipment in good working order and supports surrounding outdoor areas.
Essential Job Functions (EJFs)- Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or rotating schedule, including overtime as needed.
- Perform custodial functions timely and with high quality, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, and cleaning windows and light fixtures, with proper sanitization.
- Clean and maintain floor care, restrooms, bedrooms, nurses’ stations and isolation areas per established procedures and safety measures.
- Maintain interiors and exteriors of assigned buildings; report repairs and replenish supplies.
- Train and coach other custodians and document training conducted.
- Inspect assigned areas for cleanliness, completed work, and needed minor repairs; perform minor maintenance.
- Complete documentation accurately and timely; protect confidential information; maintain inventory and equipment records.
- Support residents’ health and safety; participate in disaster response/COOP as required, which may involve alternate shifts or locations.
Skills And Abilities
(KSAs)
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards, and sanitation regulations.
- Knowledge of infection control, inventory control principles and methods.
- Skill in use of custodial equipment, materials and safe handling of chemicals.
- Skill in use and maintenance of building maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions and to train others.
- Ability to supervise the work of others and to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods and to work harmoniously with coworkers and residents.
- Ability to work irregular hours.
Must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days after hire to drive a state vehicle. Applicants with an out-of-state license must provide an original certified driving record. Eligible driving record required per HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Initial Screening CriteriaOne of the following is required:
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent;
- Paid work experience in any field; or
- Unpaid housekeeping/custodial service experience.
Six months of experience in custodial or environmental services work in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel or other similar residential setting.
