Public Works Maintenance Worker or Public Works Licensed Maintenance Worker

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Public Works Maintenance Worker performs a wide variety of specialized duties for the Public Works Department. This position involves manual labor in the construction, maintenance, and repair of City infrastructure, facilities, and property. The employee performs a range of maintenance tasks related to public works operations and services and performs other duties as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

This position receives direct supervision from the Public Works Director, Public Works Assistant Director, or Public Works Crew Leader. This position does not exercise supervisory responsibilities over other employees.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs to water and wastewater systems
  • Install new water lines, taps, and meters
  • Read and record water meter readings
  • Perform street maintenance and repairs, including patching streets, laying asphalt, and pouring concrete
  • Secure work zones with barricades, barrels, and appropriate signage
  • Repair and replace street signs and poles as needed
  • Perform parks and grounds maintenance, including mowing, weed eating, trimming shrubbery, raking leaves, chipping debris, and trash removal
  • Clean drainage ditches and culverts
  • Apply herbicides and pesticides
  • Perform routine maintenance for City buildings
  • Perform regular maintenance on the City Splash Pad
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, small to heavy equipment, and City vehicles
  • Drive trucks and equipment of various sizes and weights to load, haul, and unload materials such as gravel, sand, concrete, asphalt, and equipment
  • Inspect equipment and perform preventative maintenance and repairs
  • Assist with City-sponsored special events
  • Perform animal control duties in the absence of an Animal Control Officer, including removal of deceased animals from roadways, capturing stray animals, and transporting animals to the shelter
  • Perform all duties in accordance with applicable safety and security standards and policies
  • Ensure compliance with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations
  • Perform other duties as assigned
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education and Eligibility
  • Must be a United States citizen or provide legal documentation authorizing employment in the U.S.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • High school graduate or possession of a GED
Licensing and Certifications
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Must obtain either a Class "D" Water or Wastewater License issued by TCEQ within one (1) year of hire and obtain both licenses within eighteen (18) months as a condition of employment
  • Must maintain all required TCEQ licenses as a condition of employment
Work Schedule
  • Must be available to work Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Closed on Fridays; however, overtime, on-call duty, nights, weekends, and holidays may be required
Physical and Environmental Requirements
  • Ability to operate machinery, tools, and equipment
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds and push, pull, or move objects exceeding 75 pounds
  • Ability to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, smell, talk, and hear for extended periods
  • Ability to work primarily outdoors in extreme weather conditions
Pre-Employment Requirements
  • Must pass a background check, physical examination, and drug screening
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • One (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of water and sewer systems
  • Experience operating specialized equipment such as a backhoe, tractor, skid steer, or similar equipment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
