District Primary Purpose:

To assist and promote La Joya ISD in implementing a rigorous curriculum/instructional program that supports student success and achievement.

Department Primary Purpose:

Maintain, repair and assist in installing boilers, chillers, air compressors, pumps and cooling systems for the school. Duties include but are not limited to: checking gauges, maintaining trunk lines, replacing defective apparatus, providing preventative maintenance and performing additional tasks as assigned by the Physical Plant Manager.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

High School Diploma/GED or Higher

Vocational or technical school or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job

Valid Texas Drivers License

Must obtain and maintain a universal refrigeration certification required by the Environmental Protection Agency

Experience:

Two to three years of HVAC/boiler/chiller repair and maintenance

Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to compare and judge the readily observable functional, technical, structural or compositional characteristics (weather similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things

Ability to speak or signal people to convey or exchange administrative and technical information

Ability to give assignments and/or directions to co-workers or assistants

Effective organization, communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to learn and understand complex principles and techniques

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Service and repair chillers, air compressors and cooling towers and circulation pumps, including glycol and chemical testing.
  • Check for safety, integrity and energy efficiency; trouble shoot all systems.
  • Mount compressor and condenser units on platform of floor, using hand tools, following blueprints of engineering specifications; connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and circulating ventilation fans to control panels and control panels and connects control panels to power source.
  • Install and maintain water heaters of various sizes.
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, and assemble chilled water lines used in building heating/cooling system using such tools as hacksaws, welding equipment, pipe traders, etc.
  • Check and maintain air pressure, gauge, site glasses, water and chemical feeder, electrical wiring and ice storage systems.
  • Provide preventative maintenance on tools, machinery, and property ensuring readiness and the achievement of safety standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
  • Ability to stand, walk, talk or hear, use hands to finger, handle or feel, push/pull, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, reach with hands and arms and taste or smell (67% to 99% of the work day).
  • Able to sit (0 to 33% of the work day).
  • Occasionally (0 to 33% of the work day) lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Special vision requirements include: 20/20 (corrected), ability to identify and distinguish colors. Be able to adjust eye to bring an object into sharp focus, judge distances and spatial relationships and observe an area peripherally.
  • Work environment; exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, wet humid conditions, working near moving mechanicals parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation and work with some form of vibration (67 to 99% of the work day), work with explosives (0 to 33% of the work day).
  • The typical noise level for the work environment is moderate noise.
  • Hearing requirements include: ability to hear alarms on equipment, client calls and instructions from department staff.
  • Repetitive motion actions include: use of foot control, both feet (7+ hrs. of the work day), use hands, both hands (7+ hrs. of the work day), grasping simple/light objects (7+ hrs of the work day), grasping firm/heavy objects (7+ hrs of the work day).
  • POSITION WORKING DAYS: 244 Days
