Fleet Maintenance Manager, Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Care Flite is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit ambulance service sponsored by Baylor Scott & White Health, JPS Health Network, Methodist Health System, Parkland, and Texas Health Resources. Care Flite provides medical transport by helicopter, airplane, and ground ambulance, and non‑medical transport via wheelchair van.
Job DescriptionWe are seeking a detail‑oriented Fleet Technician to join our team in Kaufman, TX. This is a full‑time position that is responsible for the comprehensive maintenance and repair of Care Flite’s ambulance fleet, ensuring the vehicles are safe, reliable, and fully operational for emergency response. The role includes conducting routine inspections, diagnosing and addressing mechanical and electrical issues, performing preventive maintenance, and executing necessary repairs.
Fleet Technicians are tasked with maintaining, inspecting, repairing, and modifying Care Flite ambulances to remain in optimal condition and street‑worthy on a 24‑hour, as‑needed basis.
Responsibilities:
- Install and maintain driver behavior monitoring equipment, modems, and ambulance video systems.
- Demonstrate knowledge of all non‑medical equipment in ambulances and wheelchair vans.
- Ensure safe operation of emergency vehicles in compliance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as Care Flite policies.
- Assist in preparing and shuttling vehicles for repairs and service.
- Conduct all interactions professionally and courteously, positively representing Care Flite.
- Efficiently manage time to cover all job responsibilities.
- Assist the Fleet Services Manager in tracking vehicles for service readiness and preventive maintenance.
- Communicate vendor performance issues to the Fleet Services Supervisor.
- Demonstrate clear and effective communication in both written and oral forms.
- Actively promote teamwork and cooperation with Care Flite personnel and external agencies.
- Ensure vehicles are mechanically sound before being placed in service.
- Collaborate with the Fleet Services Manager to address and resolve mechanical or monitoring device issues reported by crews.
- Contribute to achieving KPIs and performance goals by adhering to department standards.
- Identify and report efficiency or cost‑saving opportunities to the Fleet Services Manager.
- Seek opportunities to improve professional skills or participate in work‑related projects during downtime.
- Ensure all tasks are completed proficiently.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or technical certification in automotive or diesel mechanics is preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair, preferably with a focus on emergency vehicles or ambulances.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Strong understanding of preventive maintenance procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret vehicle schematics, diagrams, and repair manuals.
- Familiarity with vehicle diagnostic tools and software.
- Excellent problem‑solving skills and attention to detail.
- Valid driver’s license.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in various conditions, including outdoors and in confined spaces.
- Ability to work on your feet for extended periods.
- Must successfully complete the job placement assessment.
- Ability to make decisions that have a moderate impact on the immediate work unit.
