Job Description

PRIMARY

PURPOSE:

To be responsible for helping to maintain the physical school plant and grounds in a condition of operating excellence so that full educational use of it may be made at all times.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Certification:

High School Diploma or GED, preferred

Clear driving record, required

Valid Texas driver's Class C license, preferred

Special Knowledge/

Skills:

  • Ability to handle and to use potentially harmful cleaning supplies safely and efficiently
  • Knowledge of basic techniques of minor repairs of building and grounds maintenance
  • Ability to read and understand instructions for cleaning, maintenance and safety procedures

Experience:

One (1) or more years working in custodial services, preferred

    Minimum $12.50, Midpoint $14.85, Maximum $17.20

Note: Starting pay for a new hire in a pay range plan will be determined individually based on each person's job‑related experience and salaries paid to peer employees in the same position with similar experience.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • 1. Provide for a program of preventive maintenance to ensure that buildings and premises are kept neat, clean and safe at all times.
  • 2. Maintain temperature of building at a comfortable, yet economical setting.
  • 3. Inspect the building daily, make minor building repairs as needed and report major repairs and/or safety hazards to the immediate supervisor on appropriate forms.
  • 4. Assist staff with movement of furniture, supplies and equipment as necessary or as directed by supervisors.
  • 5. Use safe practices in the custodial maintenance of the facility and attend safety meetings.
  • 6. Comply with safety and hazardous laws and regulations in the performance of his/her job.
  • 7. Maintain an inventory of all cleaning supplies and equipment and notify head custodian when additional supplies are needed.
  • 8. Attend meetings as required or directed by supervisors.
  • 9. Participate in job safety training, asbestos awareness notification and training on use of maintenance supplies and equipment.
  • 10. Work outside of regular assigned work schedule to include extra‑curricular functions and to repair/replace needed facilities that may involve night and/or weekend duty as requested.
  • 11. Participate in orientation and monitoring of new custodians.
  • 12. Follow a cleaning schedule that will include the cleaning of floors, chalkboards, wastebaskets, windows, furniture, equipment and restrooms.
  • 13. Inspect machines and equipment for safety and efficiency.
  • 14. Follow procedures for opening and closing the building, locking, checking and safeguarding facilities daily.
  • 15. Assist during the summer for the painting of the interior and exterior of the building.
  • 16. Stay informed of the District’s energy conservation procedures and implement them at his/her campus.
  • 17. Perform crossing guard duties as assigned.
  • 18. Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
  • 19. Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor (primary evaluator).

EQUIPMENT USED

Shop equipment and tools: Custodial cleaning equipment (scrubber, wet/dry vacuum, burnisher, backpack vacuum, ride/walk behind auto scrubber) and supplies, ladder, scaffold, small hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, sockets, pliers, crimpers, wire cutters, etc.), handsaws, power tools (saw, drill, sander, etc.), torque wrench, drills, grinder, jacks, lift equipment, fire extinguishers

Vehicles and related equipment: Safety equipment (flares, reflective signs), radio communication equipment
