Position: Custodian/Facilities and Maintenance Position available 10/01/2025
Location: Kaufman

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains the cleanliness of all assigned County buildings by performing custodial functions such as sweeping and mopping.
  • Clean and maintain different types of floors (e.g., tile, hardwood, concrete).
  • Floor Preparation:
    Prepare floors for cleaning machine operation by sweeping and/or vacuuming debris.
  • Operating Floor Machines: proficiently operate and maintain various floor cleaning machines, including automatic floor scrubbers, buffers, and polishers.
  • Carpet Care: vacuum carpets and rugs thoroughly. Spot clean spills and stains. May be required to operate carpet extractors for deep cleaning.
  • Equipment Maintenance:
    Perform basic maintenance on cleaning equipment.
  • Empties trash containers in all locations and disposes of them by taking them to the dumpsters from the buildings as needed.
  • Performs daily restroom maintenance to include thoroughly sanitizing toilets, washing and disinfecting basins, countertops, and walls, replenishing toiletry supplies in the restrooms, and applying cleaning chemicals as appropriate.
  • Cleans and dusts office furniture, walls, baseboards, windows, and countertops in designated work areas.
  • Cleans and sanitizes kitchen areas within offices.
  • Sanitizes doors, door handles, light switches, and public drinking fountains.
  • Sweeps staircases, sanitizes, and polishes handrails as needed.
  • Ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures and reports unsafe conditions.
  • Works as part of a team and maintains a cooperative, helpful attitude towards fellow workers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Maintains confidentiality and security of all courthouse property, information, and systems.
  • Performs related work or duties as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma (or GED certificate) preferred.
  • Experience working in maintenance or a related field preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Proper methods and techniques for custodial maintenance.
  • Operational characteristics for cleaning equipment and tools.
SKILLS AND ABILITY TO:
  • Understand and recognize occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Use cleaning agents and custodial supplies properly.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Interact with supervisors, co-workers, vendors, and other county departments.
  • Follow workplace safety policies and procedures.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Must be able to work independently with limited supervision.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Must possess a valid and appropriate Texas Class C driver’s license and acceptable driving record at the time of appointment and throughout employment in this class series.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, and stand for long periods of time; lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds, such as cleaning equipment or materials to dispose of; and perform repeated pulling, bending, stooping, squatting, and/or kneeling. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK

ENVIRONMENT:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee works mostly indoors, occasionally in outside weather conditions. This position may work near moving mechanical parts and is often exposed to fumes and airborne particles.
