Our Roots

Sharyland Water Supply Corporation was established in May of 1968 for the purpose of providing safe, affordable drinking water to the rural communities in and around Mission, McAllen, and Edinburg. We continue to strive in that endeavor.

Sharyland Water Supply Corporation was created by a group of determined, community-minded men in the 1960's. With the help of Farmers Home Administration, a loan was acquired and construction began to build a rural water system. Initially, 700 property owners committed to take water service once construction was complete. Today, more than 50 years later, there are over 19,000 water connections on the system.

The Corporation has approximately 100 square miles of Certified Area, 800 miles of water lines, three water plants, four elevated storage tanks and plans for additional water system improvements in the works.

The Corporation has over 100 employees and a 7 person Board of Directors, all of whom are dedicated to the job required to ensure that Sharyland Water Supply Corporation continues to be the best it can be.

As a Plant Operator, you help safeguard reliable, compliant drinking water by keeping treatment operations stable across rotating shifts. You’ll focus on monitoring plant performance, running lab testing, and maintaining accurate operational records to support safe, efficient production.

Key responsibilities include operating and inspecting treatment equipment (pumps, motors, chlorination/ammonia systems, chemical tanks), supporting installation/inspection/repair work, and responding to breakdowns and after-hours incidents while delivering professional customer service.

• High School Diploma or GED
• Preferred: 1 year of experience as a plant operator
• Must have or obtain within 1 year:
  Class “D” Water License
• Valid Texas driver’s license
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather and in potentially hazardous environments; lift/move 50+ lbs; frequent standing, walking, climbing, and stooping

Your shift starts with a quick review of plant readings and prior notes, then you settle into steady oversight—checking trends, documenting results, and adjusting within established targets to keep water quality consistent. You’ll move between control points and the field, verifying equipment status, keeping chemical day tanks staged, and coordinating sample pulls and log entries. When conditions change—weather swings, demand shifts, or alarms—you pivot quickly, communicate clearly, and restore normal operations.

Between rounds, you keep the site orderly and ready for the next crew, and you may head out locally for inspections or support work. Some days are routine; others require calm, safety-first response after hours.
