Farnsworth Group is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer of HVAC/Building Systems in one of the following locations:
Champaign, Lisle, Normal, Peoria, or Tinley Park, IL. This role involves multi‑project responsibilities for HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and specialty piping system engineering and design for healthcare, commercial, industrial, and educational facilities. It is client‑facing, reports to a senior engineering manager, and offers opportunities for growth through mentoring and training.
- Prepare accurate HVAC, plumbing, controls, and specialty piping system construction drawings, including specifications.
- Perform construction administration, including submittal reviews and project revisions during construction.
- Prepare preliminary schematics through final designs for projects, including calculations, equipment selection, and layouts.
- Actively engage in and assume responsibility for code research and application.
- Interface with other disciplines, clients, and contractors, leading projects to successful completion.
- Provide leadership, mentoring, and coordination of the production staff.
- Assist in maintaining project design budgets and schedules while pursuing quality results.
- Perform quality control reviews of HVAC and plumbing design work done by others.
- Assist in business development activities, including writing fee proposals and conducting project scoping walks with potential clients.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering.
- 10+ years of professional experience in HVAC and plumbing design for buildings.
- A Professional Engineering License (PE) is required.
- Prior management or mentoring of staff required.
- Design experience relative to medium/large commercial and institutional facilities.
- Strong familiarity with Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with Carrier HAP, Trane Trace, or similar.
- Strong and communicative team player in a multi‑disciplinary environment, able to fully lead projects from start to finish.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to contribute to several projects simultaneously.

$100,000 – $130,000 (Salary determined by education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal and external equity).
