Estimator
Roberts Environmental Control Corp. is looking for an entry-level Mechanical Estimator / Estimating Engineer to join our estimating team.
This role is ideal for someone with a Mechanical Engineering degree, Mechanical Engineering Technology degree, construction management background, or similar technical education who is interested in learning mechanical construction, HVAC systems, piping, sheet metal, and estimating.
You do not need to be an experienced estimator on day one. We are looking for someone who is sharp, detail-oriented, technically curious, comfortable with drawings and numbers, and interested in building a long-term career in mechanical contracting.
This position will work closely with experienced estimators, project managers, field leaders, vendors, and subcontractors to learn how commercial HVAC, sheet metal, and piping projects are estimated from the ground up, because apparently buildings still refuse to price themselves.
What You’ll Do- Assist with digital takeoffs for ductwork, HVAC piping, hydronic piping, equipment, accessories, insulation, and related mechanical scopes.
- Review mechanical drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, details, addenda, alternates, and bid documents.
- Learn how to read and interpret HVAC, piping, sheet metal, architectural, structural, and electrical drawings.
- Help build labor, material, equipment, vendor, and subcontractor cost estimates. Support preliminary budgets, conceptual estimates, hard bids, design-build estimates, and final proposals.
- Assist with soliciting, reviewing, and organizing vendor and subcontractor quotes.
- Help identify missing scope, drawing conflicts, design gaps, and potential bid risks.
- Maintain organized estimate files, drawing logs, quote comparisons, and bid documentation.
- Use digital takeoff and estimating software to measure, quantify, and organize project scope.
- Attend pre-bid meetings, site walks, scope reviews, and project turnover meetings when needed.
- Work with estimators, project managers, field supervisors, engineers, vendors, and subcontractors to clarify project requirements.
- Learn Roberts’ estimating standards, production rates, templates, workflows, and internal best practices.
- Support bid-day coordination, proposal preparation, and final estimate reviews.
- Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Construction Management, or related technical degree preferred.
- Strong interest in construction, mechanical systems, estimating, project management, or design-build contracting.
- Ability to read or learn to read construction drawings, mechanical plans, specifications, and equipment schedules.
- Strong math skills and comfort working with measurements, quantities, formulas, spreadsheets, and cost data.
- Basic understanding of HVAC, piping, ductwork, thermodynamics, fluid systems, or mechanical design concepts is a plus.
- Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, Excel, or other technical software is a plus.
- Internship, co-op, field experience, construction exposure, or mechanical contractor experience is a plus.
- Strong computer skills, especially Microsoft Excel, PDF review tools, and general file organization.
- Ability to communicate professionally with internal teams, vendors, subcontractors, engineers, and customers.
- High attention to detail and willingness to ask questions when scope is unclear.
- Ability to manage deadlines, stay organized, and work in a fast-moving bid environment.
- Curious, coachable, and willing to learn.
- Accurate, organized, and detail-driven.
- Comfortable working with drawings, numbers, and technical information.
- Interested in how buildings, HVAC systems, and construction projects actually come together.
- Able to handle deadlines without turning into a bid-day gremlin.
- Willing to ask questions instead of guessing and hoping the estimate fairy fixes it later.
- Professional, dependable, and comfortable working with both office and field teams.
- Interested in building long-term expertise in mechanical contracting, estimating, project management, or design-build construction.
